AD&D elf magic-user/fighter. Good with a sword, bow, and fireballs. A bit of stealth from elvish abilities, especially in elvish chain. Guys like this are the reason elves know they're better than everyone else.

Human hexblade... err pact of the blade warlock (with magic initiate and his trusty rat familiar).

Or half-orc fighter/thief to remind me of my old 1e days.

Of all time? Elf rogue. It's a classic.

In this edition? Anything human. The feat is worth it. Or, High Elf. The cantrip adds so much character.

My current favorite oddball combo? Halfling monk. Way of Open Fist for the push/prone on flurry. Really fun with the ability to move through enemies.

Human Fighter. I'm playing a level 5 Human Battlemaster Fighter with the Great Weapon Master feat right now. He is often a hindrance to the party with his reliance on light and nothing supernatural in ability, but when he has a chance to do what he does well, it hurts. As he can't rely on magic, he relies on cunning and taking risks to do surprising things.

Half-orc rogue.

Mine wasn't a backstabbing thug, though. Just a dedicated craftsman who honed his skills to remain useful in a society that would chuck him in the river if he wasn't.

And when called for, he would use his hammers to "adjust" problems that weren't made of wood.
