What's your favourite version or variation of D&D?

For nostalgia, the BECMI Basic Set, for settings and longevity, AD&D2, and for player options, Pathfinder. I liked the amount and diversity of support for D&D3.x/D20. Most of my groups, however, became less interested in the complexity of that edition and the gamist approach of D&D4e.

For my current narrativist group, the simplicity of the Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game, a D20 retro-clone. I'm not yet convinced that D&D Next/5e will succeed in being all things to all role-players with modularity.

2nd Edition is the only version of the game that my friends and I didn't burn out on, we just put it down for a while and played other games.

So that's the closest I think I come to having a favorite edition.

B/X D&D. Run by the book, it creates a fantastic, suspenseful dungeon/wilderness exploration game. But the system is light enough to build on and expand into high fantasy adventure.

Another vote for Moldvay / Cook B/X D&D.

I used to think that I wanted an infinite number of character and combat options, but 3.5e and 4e taught me that all that tends to come at the cost of slowing down the story. Now that I can no longer play for 8 hours a week, or even 4, I've gotta go with the simple elegance of Moldvay basic.

(With advantage/disadvantage and ability check systems from the first Next play test packet tacked on.)

I don't have a favorite version, rather I have favorite parts of different versions.

One that hasn't been mentioned so far is the Basic D&D Rules Cyclopedia by Aaron Allston. The sheer breadth of that book marks it as one of my all-time D&D favorites; I mean it's got evasion & pursuit rules, siege warfare, treasure tables, monsters, encounter balancing guidelines, dungeon mapping shorthand, and pretty much everything needed to run a campaign!

Just at the moment, probably AD&D, but I'm running 4E, 13th Age and Next and enjoying them all.

Cheers!

Right now I'm playing Next, 4e, and Pathfinder. I am enjoying them all. My favourites of all time include BECMI, 2e, Conan, and Fantasycraft.
