What's your single favorite D&D creature?

In general, I like giants. Big and Stompy is pretty much what determines coolness for me in any context. However, I must say I've been itchin' to use a quickling (from Tome of Horrors) in a game for some time now. How can you say no to always-invisible superquick CE fey? And if I'm ever feeling really ornery, I'll give it rogue and assassin levels... :]

Treents. I love Treents and I'm not 100% sure why. I've never read or seen any of the LotR books or movies. So when I first saw a Treent, I just thought it was the coolest idea with so many possabilites. Then one day my buddy mentioned that there were these slow mumbling 'Rents' or whatever they are called it LotR. Oh well, I still love Treents. The combo well with so many other monsters, and I really like above-ground adventures compaired to under-ground dungeons. Someday, I want to play a Treent character with class levels in Ranger (or maybe Barbarian).

I am also a big fan of Yuan-ti as well. They work great as a 'bad-guy' racial group and have lots of ways for them to be part of a campaign world.

It's honestly a 50/50 split.

I love illithids. A civilised species of alien creatures with an inscrutable agenda and a horrible ecology. They can serve as the antagonists for a whole campaign from dominated thralls at 1st level on up, come with a ready-made species of opponents (githzerai) for the PCs to form ambiguous alliances with, and are disquieting enough that they can provoke a response from most players.

I also love fiends. A slight cheat, here, to include at least three major species (baatezu, tanar'ri, and yugoloths), but for the purposes of describing why I like them there's no difference. Cults, conquest, corruption - what's not to like?

Beholders - they are the quintessential D&D monster to me - big, scary, with lots of cool powers, and every time there has been one (or one of its kin) in any game I've been in its always made for a fun and interesting combat / situation.

But they are best used sparingly.

My favorite, lets see illithid, no wait, orcs, or maybe goblins. No definiately kobolds... and gnomes. Yeah, kobolds and gnomes, two races that hate each other, yeah they're my favorites. Can't cut it any more.
