Also, once in a while a particularly good director can trick a person into making a leap in ability but it cannot be attributed to acting talent nor likely to be reproduced by the actor, even with the same director.
To be honest, I've always thought Joss Whedon had a very good eye for talent. Even if we discount Faith, pretty much all his other characters were solidly cast, across all three of his shows. (Maybe he had a really great casting person.)
So, if he's willing to go with a show based around Dushku, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
