When death becomes him.......

I use an XP debt system grabbed from one I saw here on the boards. I, too, find level loss to be far too messy, so when my PCs die and are resurrected by some means or another, they incur an XP debt equal to the amount they would have to earn to regain the level if they had lost it. For example, let's say we have a 4th level character. According to the core rules, he'd drop back to 1500 XP through 3rd level. Thus, he would incur a 1500 XP debt.

This seems to work out pretty well, and is probably more lenient, as it is easier to work off that debt since you retain your level than it is to lose the level and regain it.

Well, since reserection doesn't exist in Rokugan............

For the record:
Indeed I am looking this from the D&D point of view and not from the Rokugan point of view. In Rokugan it's probably a lot more uncommon for a character to die.

Why do you say that? My Rokugan game used the d20 system. I used the Oriental Adventures book which is a DnD book made by WotC. And you asked what people use, so I answered.

nono I'm not familliar with Rokugan so I just thought so, no offense intended.

But looking at my D&D game, where death is not uncommon, I can't imagine starting a new character just like that.

I understand Asheron. I have no real experience with PC death. They came close in my Rokugan game many times. But PC death is a major issue. In the current campaign I am in, reserection rules are really weird. Its a skill you must make while casting the spell, and need special material components. So when my last charecter died, I just rolled 4d6 (we actually use point buy, but thats not the point) and made a new charecter. They were in the middle of a drow city.. I didn't want them adventuring to reserect my guy and be fighting drow all at the same time.
