6) Don't begin the sentence with "whatever"; though I'm sure this is incorrect grammar, I'm not sure what the rule is.

I think that one is technically okay. Is it not an interjection? I wonder if it should be followed by a period instead of a comma, though. I'm not sure. Stylistically, however, it is usually meaningless filler and better left out. Furthermore, this particular word is unnecessarily confrontational, and likely to invoke heated responses the likes of which are seen in this thread as a response to his post. If the intent was not to raise the ire of readers, then it was poor grammar usage. If the intent was, indeed, to raise the ire of readers, than I would suggest that the better aspects of a healthy respect for ones peers dictates the merits of such word usage.

I think that the internet would be a much better place if people didn't use so many invectives, like "whatever," "duh," and "Bzzzt - wrong!"

This is not to say that I am stylistically immaculate. I often use phrases and sentence constructions that are unnecessarily complicated, which is a bad thing. I'm no Hemingway. That's for sure! :)

EDIT: Paranoid spelling correction. ;

On thinking about it a little more, I am fairly sure. It is an interjection as used; as such, it should be followed either by a period or a semicolon. A dash or a colon could work, if you squint.

Normally, whatever is a pronoun, which is what was confusing me about it before. I wasn't recognizing the (fairly obvious) fact that it was being used as an interjection.

It takes a brave man to rail against improper grammar, and to make in his one-sentence rant six grammar mistakes. I'm not sure even Review Knreview would have the courage to do that.

As for your not being Hemingway: for that we can all be thankful.

LOL! I can try though:

I like Hemingway. He writes with simple sentences. They are small but convey a lot of meaning. I am writing with simple sentences now. When I do this I sound like a cave man, not Hemingway.

Your dreams come true?

Man, you English teachers and librarians need to get out of the house more! :D

Daniel

Nah - but those are the kinds of dreams that would make an S&M fetisher stop and shiver in disgust. :D

And - yes - I WOULD like a dictionary that describes a standardized way to pronounce a word. I have seen so-called "Inventive" Spelling in elementary schools introduced in the past 15 years or so, and it really curdles my milk!

-But that's a topic for another board.

I hope this helps!

Now, where have I seen this sort of lesson before... :D

Alright, I've fixed the link I posted up earlier so it actually leads to something now...

Psion, check the Alot of questions about soulmechs, feats and monks? messages in the DS group.

The idea that this is all th work of some rampant editing program is intriguing... and a bit frightening...

Yes, we Librarians DO need to get out more, but at least we have a rich imagination! ;)

This is what you get for letting spellcheckers or virus checkers touch your stuff. I may make a mockery of the spelling of a word, but at it least it is (usualy) recognizable as what it's supposed to be.

:D

On a more serious note, this is a very strange thing we have on our hands...
