Summer of 90. My friend introduced my brothers and myself to the game. We just throught it was a cool cartoon, being children of the 80s as we were. That same friend is one of my current DMs. 13 years and counting with the same DM. Different character but I still have my original, somewhere.

I wonder what this would look like if instead of asking for year we started, the question was how old?

You want to start that poll? :)

Anyway, I asked the question I did because I wanted to see in which era did people get into D&D most. I was inspired by your poll on still being in gaming for 20 years, and noticed many posters were saying they had been gaming for twenty years.

G'day

I didn't think we were talking about chess, draughts, and Monopoly, so I didn't answer 'before the 'Seventies'. I played my first RPG in April 1980, when I was in what I think you would call my junior year at high school (year 11).

81-82. Fifth grade homebrew of a midevil low magic fantasy, but we quickly moved to ninja's. It lasted until Jr. high when I picked up Gamma World and Boot Hill and then added Top Secret, and James Bond. Next came Traveller and then a home brew I created for space. MERP soon followed and a home brew I created for Zelazney's Amber series.

I Then picked up D&D in the Army becasue it was the only thing I could find players for. Ever since then I have almost strictly played D&D for the same reason. The rules/world do not really fit my vision but you can find players and to me it is realy about getting to play and get together with people more than it is anything else.

Start buying (or having parents buy) books, daydreaming, and fooling around with friends and dice? Early 80s.

Start playing with a group who actually care what the rules say, and try to "role-play" as opposed to "power-munchkin-fantisize"? Past two years.

1984 - I bought myself Basic D&D for my 13th birthday (although I'd been reading those Fighting Fantasy books for a while). The funny thing is my first ever role playing experience was running Games Workshops' Judge Dredd RPG about 6 months later (I didn't really like the "complexity" of 1st Ed AD&D at that time and was a big fan of 2000AD).

I suppose I should really pick up the new Judge Dredd RPG but, well, the GW version has a special place in my heart and I'm a little scared ;)
