1980, 10 years old.

Friend of a friend had the 3 core books and a bucketful of dice, so we spent an entire afternoon wandering through the forest bumping into one monster after another (in what I now believe may have been alphabetical order).

I remember I played John Baggins, First Level Halfling Thief---the DM insisted we give our characters our own first names.

In any event, nothing in my 20+ year gaming history was as momentous as when I found my first magic item: the fabled Cloak of Elvenkind.

i started roleplaying in the 60's.

got caught playing doctors and nurses with a girl friend.

i started playing D&D in the 70's.

I started in 1981, when a friend got me into the Fantasy Trip's Death Test and Melee; switched to Basic D&D with the red book with the Erol Otus cover.

Late 1990 or early 1991. Either way, it was my freshman year of high school. I played once before about 4 years earlier (4th, maybe 5th grade?) but it was only for a few hours and I really had no idea what it was.

1976. Played in school a lot.

We used to play in English class by passing notes. I even devised a system of "dice rolling" without dice. I (DM) would have a series of numbers written down on a page. Players would then write me a number in the appropriate range D8 (1-8) or whatever. My number would be one and I would add their number to figure out their die roll, cycling back as necessary.

Example :
Roll a D20
DM number is 11 (11=1)
You write me back 19
Your roll = 9

Example Two
Roll a D20
DM number is 18 (18=1, 19=2, 20=3, 1=4, 2=5,etc.)
Player writes 16
Your roll = 19

It was a clever little system and we got quite a lot of use out of it in those days. I have used it on long road trips with friends as well, and anytime you don't want to get the funny little shapes out.

I flunked 7th grade English BTW - my teacher did not think I was paying attention;)
