When Gamers Become Farmers

Sounds cool...

A little while ago, a shovel and I had a long argument with my garden. So, I feel a little need to insert thoughtfulness - agriculture is not easy. Livestock less so. Animals are not cheap or simple to keep. They take lots and lots fo work. Theyll take timie away from other work, your hobbies, and your family. That's why full-time farmers exist, and they work harder than office-folk realize.

If you're the sort of person who likes that sort of thing, bully for you! Hop to it! But don't do it lightly.

Considering I already have 7 dogs, 4 cats, 8 birds, and 750 gallons in saltwater aquariums, what are a few more animals? ;) I was considering Scottish highland cattle, as they don't have to be barned and eat weeds that other cows would ignore. Granted, I have seen the mess they make of a pasture. That's why I suggested alpacas to my wife. Alpacas need a 3-sided shelter and will eat grass. They also choose one particular spot to do their business, so you don't have to watch where you step.

Updates are now at www.aeolius.com. Caution, if you watch the movies, turn your sound down, unless you wish to hear me blathering on about acres, etc. - thus spoiling the illusion that I exist solely on the internet ;)

The results of the perc test are in and it looks good. Now the sale of the property can proceed. :)

I added two new videos at www.aeolius.com . I shot them at night, while riding the 4x4 ranger around the property with my kids. While the headlights were on, I used the vidicam's IR mode, to get that "Blair Witch" feel to it. With luck, today I'll video the two buildings I want to tear down; the singlewide trailer filled with cobwebs and mold and the barn (which I wouldn't mind keeping, except it's where I want to build the house).

An update: I closed on the property on Thursday.

One of my potential neighbors, a woman renting six acres next to my new land, killed herself a few days ago. I found this out by driving by the land and seeing a "SLOW - FUNERAL" sign in the yard.

I updated the aerial photo of "The Land" to include an image map which links to more detailed images.

Obviously, you need to build a few thatched-roof buildings and a list. Then call the local SCA chapter and you'll never need to buy your own beer, again.

Here's an update:

My wife and I consulted with an architect and, after six or ten major revisions, have gotten the house to a size we can almost afford. We have big the project out to three builders, who are now working on their proposals. It was difficult designing a house that had an "old farmhouse" look to it, while still making room for modern amenities and handicap accessibility (elevator, wider halls and doorways, roll-in shower, etc).

Later in the week, with luck, Time-Warner will run cable out to a travel trailer that I'm keeping on the land. I intend to play around with a wireless network (D-Link DWL-2700AP) and some outdoor network cameras (Toshiba IK-WB11A Net Cam), as time permits.
