Yeah, unless that NPC is going to be someone they're going to beat down later on, the fireballing is kind of stupid.

a. Ask the NPC in character for some Gold to raise dead the 3rd level allies he killed ... this could lead to some interesting roleplay and may explain some things
Possible. That's not the most interesting plot... but it's a nice plot. Therefore I think the people who have said "Stick a bit to the game" are right... and keep us updated, how it evolves?Whizbang Dustyboots said:Or the DMPC thing could also be setting up a Gandalf/Dumbledore situation: "Look how badass Caster X is! We're lucky we have him! Oh no, he's gone! What do we do against Bad Guy Y now?"

I don't see this as showboating, or whatever derogatory term folks are using to describe the incident. The encounter contained a higher level NPC. Not mince words, so what?
This is a problem if it happens on a regular basis. But I don't see how a single instance where the PC's are outclassed by an NPC constitutes PC disenfranchisement.
I can think of plenty of legitimate uses for the scenario described. Most of them involve foreshadowing...
All I can really tell from the OP is that the he doesn't trust the DM much, or at least is finding it difficult to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Which begs the question; "Why are you playing in that campaign?".
