'twas ink, or paint, before crayons, at least that's what my older pre-D&D wargamer cousins did, when they got their first polyhedrals.

As for myself, I didn't start until 81, and my moldvay basic set came with a crayon. My cousin pointed out that paint and ink didn't come out as easy.

your cousins were right.

we used ink. dipped with our quills and we liked it.

Sticks scralwing in the dirt are the only true means of writing. All others are pale imitations. Charcoal on a cave wall was for Gronkgaxes power-scribbling scions.
