Tiamat was Babylonian. Her Sumerian counterpart was Abzu. Primal chaos and father to the world. That's right, Tiamat's predecessor was a guy.

Abzu was also a more positive figure than Tiamat, but took less of a role in the world once his great grandkids came along. Think a Southern California primal chaos, in contrast to the Chicago style primal chaos of Tiamat.
