Guess so. In 3.5 they were Monstrous Humanoid (Earth).

Officially, yes.

But in my campaign they are statues (not a race) possessed by fiendish spirits.

I think it's a good thing that 5e left out the up- and downscaled elementals from 3e. However, it would be nice to have something for "pure elements" at various CRs - perhaps bring in some of the Mystaran elementals, like the Fundamentals (tiny, 1-HD elementals that look like bat wings) or the various Elementals of Law and Elementals of Chaos.

So you can summon what ever elemental you want, but if you want a water type CR 1/4 or pure fire type etc...
and I want CR 1 all I get is a fire snake but I need a water type, etc..

So what are the Stat Blocks for the

Earth Elemental for CR 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2
Water Elemental for CR 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2
Air Elemental for CR 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2
Fire Elemental for CR 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2,

Conjure Minor Elementals, we all know the name of the #@#@ spell

these can be made into each of the 4 elements real easy,

CR 1/4: Mud, Smoke, and Steam Mephits
CR 1/2: Magmin plus Dust, Ice, and Magma Mephits
CR 1: Fire Snake
CR 2: Azer and Gargoyle

but we should not have too. The book says to ask the DM, "the DM has the creatures' statistics", so where are they

Hi Athinar, I don't think you're quite understanding.

There are no CR 1/4, 1/2, etc. versions of water, earth, fire, or air elementals.

The spell doesn't summon minor water, earth, fire or air elementals, it summons minor creatures of the elemental type. Minor water, earth, fire and air elementals do not exist.

If you don't like it, you and your DM should work something out.

Again, the problem lies with nomenclature. The word "elemental" means two different things in 5e (and historically in 3e and, I think, 4e as well):

1. Any creature primarily composed of an element and/or originating on the elemental planes.

2. The four specific creatures "air elemental", "earth elemental", "fire elemental", and "water elemental".

The spell conjure minor elementals uses the word in the first sense. That's just like conjure animals summons beasts, or conjure celestial summons any kind of celestial.

This would have been a lot easier if they had used a different word for either one of the two uses. But then again, D&D has a history of confusing nomenclature, with the word "level" being the prime example.
