The Paladin's strong point is defense rather than offense (charging and smiting is certainly good, but fighters can do that too (minus the smiting but plus Weapon Specialization) and they don't need all their feats for it ;)).

True.

I think Paladin and Ranger are pretty well balanced. Fighter seems a bit weak compared to the other melees, and Barb maybe a tad strong

yes I have actually .
I doubt it. If you'd read the guidelines you'd know that.

a) The creation/existence of custom magic items is entirely up to the DM.
b) Even if the DM allows the creation of an item, the first approach when determining the price is to compare the new item with existing ones.
c) Even if you fall back on the guidelines in the table that's (DMG page 282) "only a starting point".

and they changed very little about this aspect they changed more about ability bonouses and skill bonuses.
By "new magic items" I was referring to new, "not already in the game", magic items. You're right about one thing though - the 3.0 DMG was also crystal clear that custom magic items can't be priced using the table alone.

In my experience, fighters greatly outdamage paladins and have far more staying power than rangers. They lack those classes' versatility, but more than make up for it in sheer battle prowess.

Clerics are weak as kittens.... face it the other players are holding your hand and keeping you live.

Oh yes! Us clerics are soooooo weak! Please, we need even more spells and feats and magic items to make us as powerful as those nasty monks! :D

My 14th-level cleric of Pelor would disagree. Righteous might + divine favor = a perfectly viable combatant. I think your D&D games must fundamentally differ from many other ENWorlders', because your opinion on clerics is vastly different from the majority.

ok i thought that sorcerers were kinda underpowerd but not this much. the only thing they really need is prolly d6 hitdie and some class abillitys.

We house ruled ours (campaign bonus, not a permanent fix). They get the d4, 'feat every 5 levels', and are limited to spells in the PHB or to a specific theme (they pick) unless they have a REALLY good reason for learniong a specific spell. We swapped the wizard out for a modified Rune Thane. Only able to cast 7th level spells, but they get the d6, extra skills per level, and they can research spells (not limited to PHB).

That's not actually the case. There's a difference between hand holding and 'block the monstous blitzkreig aimed at the healer!!!'. It isn't caudling; you're now the only viable target. The other players are just obstacles. Cut an enemies supply line...

Odds are, if a cleric didn't spend as much time buffing/healing everyone else they'd last longer than the barbarian in a similar situation.
