Before I came across this subclass, I mused about a Warforged subrace known as the Wereforged. Warforged who could shapeshift into a beast mode. You can thank Beast Wars for that. ;)
a transforming robot is a very strong concept but wildshape has honestly always been the least interesting part of druid to me.

Legend
I'm going for Elementals, largely because I'm happy with the coverage of Aberrations and Fiends from 3e days (and of course Dragons and Giants have been covered for 5e). So something that hasn't been covered, or hasn't been covered for a long time.

But between the Temple of Elemental Evil, and all the lore surrounding the Wind Dukes of Aaqa, plus of course the City of Brass, it feels like D&D has quite a lot of uncovered ground surrounding elementals.

Here's my wishlist for what I would want to see in books for the current top 3:

Fey
  • Updates for the eladrin, fairy, and harengon.
  • An overview of the fey courts and their archfey.
  • A handful of Domains of Delight.
  • Flavorful Feywild themed magic items like the ones from 4E's Heroes of the Feywild.
  • An explanation for the link between the Feywild and Arvandor.
  • Sets of optional traits to customize fey in a way that is thematic for a given archfey ruler.

Undead
  • An update for the necromancer wizard and death cleric.
  • Information about the Shadowfell and its connection to undeath.
  • Shadowfell locations other than the Domains of Dread.
  • Magical curses related to undeath.
  • Details on the Elder Evil Atropus, the World Born Dead (this guy has been mentioned a lot in passing in 5E sidebars but hasn't had a write-up since 3.5).

Elemental
  • An update for the genasi.
  • An elemental pact warlock subclass or update of the genie pact.
  • Details for a set of locations in the Elemental Planes, chiefly the cities of the efreeti, marids, dao, and djinns.
  • Some details on the Princes of Elemental Evil, the Princes of Elemental Good, and a handful of primordials.
  • The return of the weirder elementals, such as the tojanida and thoqqua, as well as the hybrid elementals of the Elemental Chaos.

I voted for elementals but I really meant genies; there’s enough lore and society there to make for an interesting campaign.

Edit to add: I think a genie book is a great reason to dive into non-European influences, especially places like Persia and central Asia that don’t get nearly enough love.

It also creates an opportunity to focus on elements instead of the celestial/fiendish conflict and open up actual morally grey conflict where there aren’t good guys and bad guys just different groups competing for resources.

Back in the TSR era of D&D, there was a book called D&D Crucible: Night Howlers. It was designed for anyone wanting to roleplay a lycanthrope PC back then.

It would be neat if this book was updated to 5e.
Unfortunately the 5e approach seems to not allow new player options that aren’t balanced with PHB options, otherwise Bigby’s would have had options for playing as giants.

Level Up has synergy feat chains that would allow a player to become a lycanthrope over the course of several levels. However, the downside to becoming a lycanthrope in Level Up is that you have to give up all of your other feat choices to achieve a good degree of a-were-ness.

Now if you want to play a descendant of a werewolf, you can play as a member of the Garoul heritage. Maybe the next best thing?
