Which illustrator's work would you like to see in gaming?

I second Vess and Russell, and I add Tom Kidd to the mix. One of my all-time favorites. He was doing Eberron with style fifteen years ago (think of his world of Gnemo as Eberron visualized by Alan Lee and John Howe).

I'm with Aaron L, Jim Lee art in a gaming book would be great. I'm not so sure how much it would fit in with fantasy (or at least what you typically see), but for modern, sci-fi, or supers Lee's artwork really knows no equal, IMO.

Am I the only one who wants to see more from Wayne A. Reynolds and more black and white stuff by Jennifer Meyer? I would also like to see Joe Mad get into doing more. That piece he did for Races of Eberron is one of my favorites.

I love WAR. One of my all time favourite artists.

Is Micheal Whealan (sp?) still alive? He did a lot of Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel coverart back in the 60's and 70's.

Dyal, I'm going to have to assume your kidding. It's the only thing that will get the agonizing image of a D&D book with Liefield...er..."art"...out of my head. :p

On a more serious note, I will also give a thumbs up to Mike Mignola (Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser covers anyone?), Guy Davis, Alex Ross (We're not worthy!) and the original gods of gaming art such as Elmore, Caldwell and Parkinson.

I'd really love to see what those artists who haven't done RPG artwork would do though, more then those we have seen, no matter how good they are. I'm eager to see a fresh, clean approach.

As for WAR and Lockwood, while they are both accomplished artists, it is actually their style I would like D&D to get away from. In my mind, when I think of them, I think of the fantasy punk look prevalent in the current incarnation of the game. My personal aesthetic just views this look as the visual equivalent of nails on a chalkboard. I spend hours and hours searching the internet for images for characters, monsters and locations and hours more drawing my own. D&D just doesn't look like D&D to us (my campaign group and I) anymore and we are a very visually oriented bunch.

Rob Liefield. We need more Rob Liefield illustrations in the RPG business.
GAAAH!

Don't scare me like that, JD!

:)

For me, it's George Pérez. I like Jim Lee a lot ("Jim Lee. Godly Jim Lee."), but if you compare the covers each one did for the upcoming Infinite Crisis #1, Pérez just pwnz Lee's cover seven ways 'til Saturday!

And always will. Perez is, are and be Da Man.

Seriously not a fan of Jim Lee myself. The sketchy linework just looks messy to me and all the women have the exact same face (Turner and Campbell women suffer from this same afflication). Just MHO of course, art is all about personal preference.

Any one in the gaming industry who thinks art isn't a major factor in the selling of RPG products needs to look at this thread. More thne 40 replies and still going...
