Which is D&D? 4e or 2e?

There is another poster HERE whose sig promises Captain America-based death for mentioning 3e!

I'm not afraid of zombies, so bring it on :p

Anyway, for me the solution is quite clear: if a friend tells me he's going to run a D&D game, I'll sit at his table, whatever book(s) he wants to use. Shouldn't that be enough?

You should try reading these boards. Plenty of eloquent and very intelligent people have done this countless times since June.

Well I happen to disagree with them; and the over arching theme of my post I was trying to convey was that while it's all D&D people have a right to not like 3rd or 4th edition.

And that is fair enough. I read your post (the one I quoted in my last) as if you were saying that 4e doesn't feel like D&D. While you might not feel that, my point was simply that plenty of other posters have demonstrated that it does to them.

The good thing about all this, is that we have the tools to please ourselves (and no, I ain't talking about silicon dolls).

If you want to play 1e or 2e, you most likely have your old books, and you can just about get anything for a reasonable price online. If that isn't enough, there is a whole bunch of retro-clones to supplement with.

If you want to play 3.x, most books can still be gotten from new, or otherwise from eBay. There is also a whole host of d20 games like Pathfinder, whose material can be used with your game.

And if want to play 4e, well, there is plenty of shiny new stuff to get as well.

There is no need to be bitter (not saying that you are) as a roleplayer. We can play whatever we want (assuming you can find players for it, obviously).

Cheers

Damn. Maybe I should have just let the Windows comparison be the end of it. I was just talking about D&D. My argument comes down to the following:
IT'S ALL D&D!!!

To me, BECMI is D&D, and AD&D 1e is D&D. AD&D 2e is an offshoot of D&D that reasonably approximates it. To me, 3e is D&D as well. 4e, on the other hand, I consider to be D&D's new significant other, who seems basically all right but not someone I personally want to hang out with. So it's a very personal thing. You could do Dragonlance or Mystara or whatever with 3e, and to me, that made it D&D. 4e changed too much, and the play style is distilled from some of my least favorite things in 3e.
