I used to use Games Workshop minis, but switched over to Reaper. The style is fairly similar, and the price is much better. That said:
a) GW does have a few really killer figures which are worth the high price tags (Aenur, the Sword of Twilight - ten dollars for a 25mm, but so worth it!)
b) I'm not that well-versed in that many of the other mini companies, as the FLGS doesn't have that wide a range.

Here's my list:
For straight D&D style figs no one, and I do mean no one, does it better than Reaper.
I-Kore's Celtos line is perfect for any Slaine campaigns. They also make some of the best dwarf figs going.
Rackam: They are really expensive and they are fairly brittle, but they are hands down the most detailed metal figs on the market. They are 30mm figs, just a hair bigger than most other companies, but when they look as good as they do, who really cares?
Privateer: I just bought 5 of their Iron Kingdoms figures and they are top notch. They're not the standard fantasy fair, but if you like the artwork from the IK books the minis will not disappoint.
Fenryll: Their figs aren't pewter, they're made out of high cast resin. It's a little funky when you're used to metal. Their figs a little bigger than most as well, but they have some excellent figures in their lines, and the price is pretty good for what you get.
Mage Knight: If you remove them from their clicky-bases, some of the figures in the line are actually quite good. The new booster set has some great figs in it.
D&D Minis: They may not look great all the time, but for the price this is the best deal in minis. There are a LOT of places that sell singles, so not wanting to deal with random packaging isn't that big of a deal nowadays. (This goes for Mage Knight as well.)
I would mention GW, but aside from some of their more expensive figures (Daemon Princes and Greater Daemons for instance) their figs are too static for the price. Plus, they have one of the WORST online order businesses in the industry. Plus, their customer service is just as terrible as well, so when they screw up your order you'll get even more angry when you try and get the problem resolved.

Yeah, but bigger is better ain't it? Seriously, they are a little large, but they look awesome! They aren't that much bigger then a lot of Reaper mini's. Definately worth the extra $. If you can paint, they turn out so much better (because they're bigger and more defined).

Some good stuff listed so far. I love the Rackham minis. I'd add:
Crocodile Games: Ex-GW sculptor Chris Fitzpatrick started this company and their minis are terrific. Their main line is War Gods of Aegyptus, a fantasy game based on Ancient Egyptian mythology. Great minis for our Egyptian Adventures: Hamunaptra setting. The followup game, War Gods of Olympus, will do fantasy Greek figs and these look great as well.

Old Glory: They are primarily a historical minis company but they do also sell some fantasy figs. Their "Ghost" range includes kilted dwarves, which I could not resist. They also did a fantasy game called Dwarf Wars and a range of more traditional fantasy figs for that.

Vendel Miniatures: This British company has a cool line of fantasy figs done in a Dark Ages style. Very characterful. They also do historical minis.

I'd also recommend the old Mordheim sprues from Games Workshop. These multi-part plastic minis are totally customizable and come with a variety of weapons and accessories. I built of bunch of swabbies for my old Freeport campaign with these (and of course they're great for WFRP too). They've been repackaged as the Empire Militia boxed set, so you don't need to find an old copy of Mordheim to get them:
