Which MMORPG is for me?

I just took a look at the GuildWars website and it looks like it will be a pay-to-play game once it's officially released. Here's the entry from the GW FAQ:

How much will Guild Wars cost? NEW!

Guild Wars will be priced at a comparable cost to other first tier PC games.

Just a little FYI.

They're talking about the price of the game in the store. There's no monthly fee to play online, but you still have to go to the store and buy the game, just as you would any other game.

Guild Wars seems to have more in common with games like Diablo 2 than it does normal MMORPGs. Which could be good or bad, depending upon how much you like these types of games.

Ah... Didn't catch that.

GW looks cool, but hopefully they'll be able to keep a tight reign on their servers, or at least tighter than Blizzard had/has on the Diablo2 servers.

how about for those of us with dial-up access? :(
I played all those games on dial-up with minimal issues. CoH was probably the worst with major lag issues, but that was during the launch month, so it's likely quite a bit better now. Most of the time, I play EQ with absolutely no problems on a 31.2 Kbps connection.

Adding to the crowd...

I'll have to add to the chorus of those saying WoW -- it has excellent solo-ability, works mostly well in most cases with grouping (and excellently for instances), doesn't require an insane investitude of time, and looks gorgeous to boot. }:)

IMO the only MMORPG worth playing will be Guild Wars. No monthy fee. I don't se to point of:
1. Going to the store.
2. Paying $20-$60.00 for a game.
3. having to pay another $10-$15 PER MONTH to play a game I already paid for.

That's like saying 'Why should I pay every month for cable when I paid for my TV?' or 'Why should I pay every month to use the gym when I paid to join?'

You are paying for the time you spend playing and hopefully enjoying the game. And unlike conventional games, you are not stuck with something that sits on your shelf after you are done with it 20 hours after you bought it.

MMORPGs aren't for everyone, and most if not all demand a lot of time to get the full benefit.

Single-player games are increasingly relying on making things inordinately difficult so that the player is either reduced to 'save-die-reload' over and over, or they do away with 'save on demand' and force you to replay large chunks over and over till you get past some platform jump.

MMORPGs have their own drawbacks, but there is something about knowing there is no 'reload' option that makes them more enjoyable for me. Plus, I like to explore and see new things, and few single player games scratch that itch.

In any event, the one piece of advice I have for anyone who wants to play one is:

Stay away from the message boards

Use the websites for information if you must, but all the bitching and moaning on the message boards can ruin any game.
