Frankly, I dont see how all these monster compendiums continue to sell...I had more than enough monsters long ago.

Now a book of Epic Monsters might be interesting though.

I tend to agree. I was planning on not buying any monster books beyond the Monster Manual. But I was getting tired of the 'if you don't have Monsters of Faerun, use X' in FR stuff, so I ordered that yesterday.

I'm with Krust - I'll be picking up Monster Manual II, Tome of Horrors, and Fiend Folio when they're released.

The poll also left out Legions of Hell amd Armies of the Abyss from Green Ronin - two very cool monster books that make life that much more difficult for my players. :D

I second that vote for Armies of the Abyss and Legions of Hell... I also find myself using the Psionics Handbook and Manual of the Planes monsters quite a bit...

I personally tend to look through monster books for ideas as well as appropriate challenges that arne't standard. Even through 3rd edition has gone a long way in making the standard orc a force to be reconed with again, thanks to class levels and temlates, its nice to just have monsters that are bad to the bone.

Right now, the best looking monster book I've seen is the Monsternomicon. I'll have to beg the boys at Privateer Press for that one.

I've got Monsters of Faerun (the last FR book i will likely purchase), Legions of Hell (shame on you Krug!!), Menagerie (needs work but the ideas great!), and the Monster Manual.
I had both of the Creature Collections, but i got rid of them.
I may get MM2, but to be honest, i have more than i need for monsters, so i might not get it. The days of getting "Core" books for the sake of getting Core books is over for me.

*sighs*Can't believe you passed on the Slacerian Dragon there Warchild... or the Night-touched Controller!

Anyway, while I agree with some that the changes in 3rd make regular old stand-by more powerful in a "generic" game, I like UNIQUE monsters. Monsters that don't conform to the conventions we've all come to know and understand. So yeah, give me the Monsternomicon, give me Tome of Horror. Hell give me Liber Beastius! I just want monsters to scare the bejezzus out of my players! Monsters they'd NEVER, EVER, expect to face.

Well, i didn't really get rid of them cause they are bad or anything, i just never used them much and i was getting rid of most of SL stuff anyway. :)

Holy crap, I marked a lot of those. I admit, I'm a sucker for monster books. As has been pointed out, it's not necessary to have an enormous stack of them, considering the classes and templates and whatnot you can slap onto existing beasties. There's just something about cracking the spine on a brand new book of monsters that does my old heart good, though.

On a related note, I'm finding these past couple of years to have been a really good time for me to be a gamer. Dozens of companies are putting out some quality material for a game I really enjoy. Mind you, there was a fair amount of stuff coming out for AD&D close to 20 years ago - however, there was no way I could buy all the stuff I wanted (or, as I thought at the time, "needed".) Now, however, I'm at a point where I have a good(ish) job, I can support myself, and the quality of third party product is, for the most part, MUCH better than the "Suitable for all fantasy game systems!" stuff put out in the misty days of yore. Ahh, adulthood and 3E - a match made in heaven...Okay, now back to caressing my d20 books.
