Which sword would you take?

I'd say #1.

#1 just seems more focused. It's all about fighting evil, with powers that seem evenly distributed between offense, defense, and utility.

Sword #2 has the same distribution, but the focus is split. It has a lot of its powers based around opposing fire, but its detection powers and sentience seem focused against evil, which doesn't make sense since this sword is supposed to be a "cold" sword, not a "good" sword.

Good point.

FYI they're both ancient elven blades created as weapons aganst evil. Sword #2 simply has a frost brand theme, butg it was still created to battle evil. Thats why it still has several things that lend itself to that goal.

Well

If you are adventuring on the level of the Nine Hells of Baator that is fire-dominant. Then, yes the the frostbrand would be great. But for all around awesomness, I would suggest taking the first blade.

Ah, that makes a bit more sense. I'd still take #1 though. It opposes evil in all its myriad forms, whereas #2 seems to be good if you're fighting evil fire. It's a great sword if you're fighting Imix or Alzrius (eek! ), but beyond that, not an optimal choice.

It would depend on my character - if I am playing a paladin who hunts out demons then number 1, if I am a dwarfen defender who stands fast against fire giants and red dragons then I am all over number 2.

I might give a slight edge to number 2, the frost brand will affect more critters than the bane against evil outsiders, but that is a campaign issue. While it is most effective against fire critters any monster except those with cold immunity will be affected.

#2. Not only is it useful against Fire creatures, Fire resistance is just often handy. And the +1's to AC, saves, and init? Heal 1/day?

Nice stuff, there.

#1 for me, but I'm playing a Paladin right now, so maybe the fact that I'm drooooooling for a Holy Defender is effecting my choice...

Assuming no specific bias towards fire or creatures from the lower planes in the campaign, #2.

If we're constantly battling demons... duh #1 will win.
