Planescape all the way!

Reading through the Planescape materials inspired me more than anything that had ever or has ever been written by TSR/WotC. I enjoy Greyhawk and the Forgotten Realms too, but the awesome creativity (IMO) that went into Planescape is the epitome of great imagination.

Great stuff!

I voted for Spelljammer -- it's just the most fun that I've ever played (though it's been a long time since I played it).

Spelljammer and, to a lesser extent, Planescape -- are both hurt by the 'one vote only rule'. Both settings, while easy enough to start a campaign in, were marketed heavily, as settings that 'standard' campaigns grow into. I've noticed several posters mention that they like SJ...just that it's not first pick.

Generic fantasy settings (GH and FR) are where most people cut their teeth -- and, as in other things, you can only have one first time.

Forgotten Realms Baybeeeeee!!!

I started my D&D career in Greyhawk, and played in that setting for almost 10 years, but was always frustrated by the scant information that was provided for each region. When the FR grey boxed set was released, I almost fainted with joy. I could take the setting, set up a campaign and have almost all the detail I could ever want. Then the regional supplements started to come out, and it got even better.

Nowadays, I'm still in the Realms, and probably won't leave. I've had another ten years to develop some of my own stuff, and my roots have grown too deep to pull out now. I'd love to have tried Planescape, but never got the opportunity.

It's Planescape, no wait Dark Sun, maybe Forgotten Realms, or .... . Arrrg, alright I'll choose Planescape, because I had some of the best adventures in that setting.

I am not really an experienced player of any particular one of these famous settings, but I have had some glimpse of many through the years, played adventures based in settings' locations, browsed several sourcebooks, incorporated elements into the homebrew campaigns.

Of the above, I like Forgotten Realms, Planescape and Al-Qadim more than the others, although each of them has good and bad points.

Planescape with Al-Qadim a very close second and Dragonlance coming in at third.

If WotC would produce full setting support for Planescape they'd have my money in a second! Instead I save hundreds of dollars as I ignore the Forgotten Realms junk. I cannot seem to explain why I detest the high-magic of the Realms but love the high-magic of Planescape. Oh well, not everybody needs to be rational.

:uhoh:

I picked FR, but only because I have ran and played in it the most. Ravenloft is my favorite for DMing. I also like Greyhawk and Mystara/Known World (City of Glantri rocks!).

Strangely, I haven't played or DMed FR since 3.0 came out and I switched to it.

My current and next campaign will not be WOTC/TSR worlds though. My current campaign is Wilderlands by Necromancer/Judges Guild and my next one will be Erde by Troll Lords Games, if nothing better comes along in the mean time.

All of those settings had elements that I liked, but equally all had elements I didn't like. I seriously doubt I could ever run one "out of the box" and be happy with it. With the possible exception of short term Planescape or Dark Sun games, probably, because they were at least unique and thought provoking.

I could probably also run short term Midnight or Iron Kingdoms games, but the reason I DM is because I enjoy setting creation too much to ever play someone else's for long.

As a player, I don't particularly care too much, I suppose. A good DM can make any setting fun.

Planescape was my choice. It was the first campaign setting that I read every supplement cover to cover. It was a great setting with a lot of philosophical fun chucked in for good measure. I loved it. (Still do, honestly.)

Ravenloft came in a close second, but didn't get the nod since it no longer excites me like Planescape still does. Maybe because all the luster it had back in 2E is gone for me. It's a shame, but the new incarnation doesn't do it for me in the least.

Adios,
Kane
