I've not played X10. Can someone give me a rundown of what makes it so great?

I've only read through it, but basically, the Master of the Desert Nomads brings another war to the D&D Known World. This time, as the PCs are higher in level and have some more clout as heroes, they go about the Known World trying to build an alliance to keep the Desert Nomads from overrunning much of it (though I think Glantri and Thyatis would make them regret that decision...that's just me), so you got some dungeoneering, role playing for diplomacy/intrigue and large set-piece battles utilizing D&D's mass combat system.

I didn't buy X10 back in the day because I was turned off by several factors: 1) I didn't like the blatantly misplaced/recycled cover art (guys fighting draconians), 2) I didn't like the apparent emphasis on mass-combat Battlesystem/War Machine (this is the same reason I never bought H1 for AD&D), 3) I didn't like bringing back the Master as a villain after the PCs had presumably defeated him at the end of X5, and 4) I didn't like that it had a higher MSRP than other modules (due to bigger page-count, counter-sheet, and poster map). In retrospect I suppose I probably should have...

I had X4 and X5 for many, many years, and wanted to run an epic campaign off them, but never had a chance.

X1, on the other hand... that one I think I ran 2 or 3 times for different groups, and I wrote a story hour piece as sort of a tribute to the module a few years back.
