I think it was '88 but it very well could have been '87. In either case I was pretty young (8 or 9 depending) and I know that we didnt follow the rules as written to much. But it was fun and I got hooked and now what? Too much time and money down the drain and no end in sight (do we really want an end though? I mean, really?).

First purchase was AD&D DMG 1st ed. followed quickly by the red box set (easier to convince myself to read all the way through) and a couple of issues of dungeon (because the covers looked cool).

1979. I got kicked out of school that fall (don't ask) and my mother seemed to think I was running with the wrong crowd. One weekend she practically forced me to go try this "new game" with the son of one of her friends. The rest is history...

What a refreshing news story. I wonder if this one will make the headlines? Probably not unless the wrong crowd guys also went missing or were found hacked up by a sword.

1987. About to turn 13. Castle Caldwell. 1st-level Fighter named Warlord. Died first room. And second. And third. And ... well, you get the picture. I was hooked.

From what I remember I did buy the old white small OD&D box in 1976. However, i couldn't understand how to play and sold the box in 1978. It's only in 1981 or 1982 if i recall well, that I eventually found a group of players and did play at first basic D&D (red or blue box), then one year later AD&D.

Well, to be FAIR...you should vote '74...as you're NOT Mr Pladoh. ;)

If Diaglo didn't, he'd be lyin'..... ;)

As for me: 2000. When 3.0 came out. Dabbled a tad back in 84 but not enough to make that a viable option as it was homemade stuff with my cousin and a guy next door..... it wasn't true D&D.

1984 here... I'd been playing/reading the Fighting Fantasy books and got the D&D Basic Set as a 13th birthday present. Although, really, I didn't start playing D&D (or, rather, AD&D 1st edition) until 1987 as my first games of D&D were with me as DM... so I can honestly say I've been DMing longer than I've been playing :D

As for the age thing... there are almost a dozen players at my local club who were all born after I started playing - and all of them got into the game with the release of 3.0 or 3.5
