Wow! Better than anything else, this really indicates how many of us fogies there are on ENWorld. I too started in 1981. D&D was prescribed for me by a child psychiatrist.

Fairly obvious question. I included an option for pre 1974 as there are a couple of people who could honestly say that that come to these boards.

I can hardly beleive that I am one of only 6? I thought for sure that there was more then that :) (Yep I too started in 1974) When I was a host on the AOL Chat for TSR and then to the TSR web site when they moved off of AOL.. then got bought out by WotC.. I used to hear... When did you start playing D&D.. when I told them.. the inevitable man.. you been playing longer then I have been alive came out the next line.. man sometimes I feel old! :) But I am lucky in love that I married a woman that is a gamer too.. and has been since 1980 :)

Ravenloft
My character died before it was my turn. "Oh yeah. Fun game John. What just happened? Why is Dennis making my character chase Kelly up the tree?"

Good memories

My first ever campaign started late in the winter of 2004. Thankfully it's still going, if a bit slowly. I'd been interested in starting it for years...the earliest I can remember is surfing the official website when they had tonnes of race/class descriptions...like the giant slayer, half-giant, half-elf/half dwarf etc. That must have been like 4-5 years ago.

?!?!?! Generally folks were afraid of DnD in the early 80's. Wow.

I disagree with this assertion, though not in a "what, are you nuts?" kind of way. :D

Certainly, there was a loud, vocal, minority of haters who got way more press and credence than they deserved, but I really don't think people were generally afraid of D&D. And this is coming from a guy who was smacked in the face with some "you're gonna burn in hell for playing Satan's game" diatribe, back in the day.

(conjecture)
I'd wager people were more worried about war with the Soviet Union at the time, than D&D.
(end conjecture)
