It's now a melee weapon that doesn't threaten and provokes an AoO.

So the Ranged feats (Point Blank Shot, Rapid Shot, etc) no longer work (although Precise Shot is no longer necessary), but Melee feats like Cleave, Power Attack, Whirlwind Attack, Spring Attack, and Improved Trip work much better.

Also, since it's a melee weapon, you add your Str bonus to damage (or 1.5x if you wield it in two hands), with no need for expensive "Mighty" whips.

It's now one-handed, not light, so you don't take a penalty on Disarm checks.

Whips from Underworld

Question for those who have seen Underworld. What would be the damage on a whip as used in the movie near the end. Basically Barbed whips, but looks a little nastier.

Any thoughts?

Just use the stats for a Whip-Dagger or Nagaika (S&F and MotW respectively).

Also, unless you have Weapon Finesse it uses Str for attack rolls, which is bloody well ridiculous.

If you use Strength with a whip, it means you're pretty much just swinging it like a limp flail, smacking people in the face, and not really using, well, finesse. If you do crack the whip like it properly should be used, you might not be hitting the most vulnerable spot on the foe, but you're hitting something, and the force you deliver with the weapon means you can injure someone just as well by slashing their face as you can by walloping them in the chest.

Which brings me to my personal beef with 3.5 whips - the inability to harm armored foes. Apparently a shuriken hurled 100 feet with the Far Shot feat can still manage to deal 1d2 points of damage to the fighter in full plate, or the dragon, but a whip cannot?

I can see the 'nonlethal damage' restriction, but there are more ways to hurt someone with a whip than just cutting their flesh. You can wrap the whip around their wrist and yank, which could pull tendons. You could smack someone on the head, jarring them even if they are wearing a helmet. And you could even say that the force of the whip smashing into one's breastplate is not much different than the force of a fist.

Do I have anyone who agrees with me?

Yeah! The 3E whip's inability to harm armored foes was much better than the 3.5 whip's inability to harm armored foes!

Down with 3.5!

Okay, okay, get on a guy's case because he added '3.5' to something. It's just, whips are actually pretty cool now, and the whole not-wounding thing is like the people who revised the system were taunting me. "Here, have Cleave and Power Attack. Here, no worries about attacking people in melee. Oh, and go ahead and use Whirlwind Attack on everything in 15 ft." "Can I hurt someone wearing a loincloth?" "Nope, sorry. Loser."
