Whips and Rapid Shot?

So can a 3rd level Bard who is proficient with a whip use rapid shot (taking the -2 penalty for both shots) to benefit from 2 ranged touch trip attacks per round?

...wannabe sure I can do this before I spring it on my DM...

Sure, if he has the feat.

Technically the whip is a ranged weapon according to the PHB, so yeah go for it, I don't know of any rule that says you cant.

Why always trip attacks?

Technically it's allowed. But why do you want to use trip attacks? You'll get tripped so easily or lose your weapon. I rather go for disarms.

Btw, by my ruling you would get the -2 penalty for rapid shot on any opposed check too you make. I am quite positive this is not really covered by the rules...
