Whirlwind Attack with 10' reach weapon?

A halberd is not a Reach weapon.

Oops, you're right there, of course. Replace halberd with glaive then... he said that he meant a reach weapon, anyways. :)

Notice it doesn't say anything about opponents you threaten within 5'.

I don't think this (threaten) is really relevant. You cannot attack opponents within 5 ft. with a (standard) reach weapon (i.e. a hal... err... glaive :D).

Threatened area is only important for attacks of opportunity and flanking. You can make melee attacks without a threatened area (i.e. if you are prone).

True - unless, of course, you make a 3.0 Whirlwind Attack, in which case you can make a single attack against all enemies within 5'.

You still threaten an area when prone.

Can't really find it right now, but I'm quite sure you do not threaten when you are prone. Maybe I'm mixing that up with something else, tho. :)

AFAIK a prone character still threaten area.

But anyway, threatening is not a prerequisite for a melee attack. For example, someone without Improved Unarmed Attack feat does not threaten area when unarmed. Still, he can make unarmed attacks.

Agreed.

*nods* Including AoOs against people without IUS who attack him unarmed.

He did.

But a halberd isn't one :)

I see halberd used as the example weapon in Reach weapon questions so often, and it isn't a bloody Reach weapon.

Carry on.

You can make melee attacks without a threatened area.

In 3.5, the whip is a prime example.
