Yes they did. They claimed multiclassing in 3E would be extremely easy and simple, it would be suprerior to 2E multiclassing AND that multiclassing would allow for more character options.

To some extent its true, but in many ways its misleading.

That is completely different from "easy as breathing." They delivered exactly what they claimed... easier multiclassing (which is true), and more options for multiclassing (which is true). Now, the fact that spellcasting was screwed over was a design oversight (possibly due to the higher levels having less playtesting), but they never claimed it would be as easy as they're saying 4e is going to be.
