It will certainly convert. Extermination of the gnome race has already begun http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0539.html

I am a bit curious about what story device will the author use to keep Elan totally out of the strip for a whole year.

Elan will die, and stay dead b/c he isn't high enough level! When bards are released for 4e, they will find out that he does have a destiny and rez him.

I expect that Rich will more further away from mentions of specific mechanics and more into general gaming humour, making a conversion unnecessary.

If it does switch, i doubt it will be immediately. 4e as a baby will have only a sparse population of what 3.5 had in terms of races/classes/monsters and rather than making awkward substitutions and patches to the system to figure out what to do with bards, half-orcs, etc, he's better off just waiting until he can paint with a full pallette. I can see him waiting for as much as a year or two before doing the switch, if only to give people time to learn the rules of the game. 3.5 rules jokes are funny because they're familiar to us and we've probably experienced it, 4e jokes will need time to get the level of familiarity to be even half as funny. How can he make a 'paragon path powers choice' joke when most of the readers have probably not even cracked into thoses much more than once or twice. Will he go 4e? Only if he likes what it does to the story, and only when it would be a benefit and not a sloppy cheap twist.
I actually think there's a bit of humor to be gained by switching to 4e immediately, then changing things around as new material is published. So Elan will be a Warlord for a while, then in one strip he'll suddenly change to Bard when it's availlable. Probably the reaction of the characters will be as deadpan as the change from 3 to 3.5.

Given that the first OOTS strip was about the conversion from 3e to 3.5, I think it'd be fitting if the party converted to 4e midway through the final, epic battle of the strip. Roy could be losing, when all the sudden he has a bunch of cool new exploits because the version got switched, etc.

This is assuming that the current OOTS is drawing to the end, which I believe was confirmed a while back.

Since the comic started out with an edition-switching strip, I have to think that the Order will change editions.

Elan: "Are you saying I'm not a bard anymore?"
V: "No, you just don't have any levels in the Bard class, because it's not out for 4th Edition yet."
Elan: "So what am I, then?"
Haley: "A warlord, actually."
Elan: "I am Elan, Lord of War!"
Roy: "Are we sure about this?"
Durkon: "There is nae any other class that 'tis a better fit, unless he wants to multiclass to rediculous levels."
Roy: "How about wizard?"
V: "No."
Roy: "Or even cleric?"
Durkon: "You ken remember the Banjo nonsense?"
Roy: "Rogue?"
Haley: "Does he look like a brutal scoundrel or an artful dodger to you?"
Roy: "All right then. But why warlord?"
V: "All the portents I am able to divine suggest the bard will fill the 'leader' role, and have an 'arcane' power source. Since he clearly does not have the mastery of cosmic foces to be a wizard, nor the inlination to be a warlock, that suggests he should focus on maintaining his role for now."
Durkon: "And he cannae be a cleric, so this new-fangled 'warlord' class will hae to do."

Warlord. Oh sweet jeebus, let him be the party Warlord.

Of course, once the bard IS finally released, have him suddenly switch back.

Elan: "What? No, I'm a bard. What are you talking about?"

Other Character: "Wait a minute..."

Let the chaos begin

Switch to 4e.

Mock Elan for not switching (as the bard class isn't available) and maybe mock V for his character's spell specialization ... changing.

So... Roy becomes a warlord?

The Warlord class is built for Roy.

I don't expect to see the strip switch over unless it's a final joke at the very end of the run. Yes, the first strip was about the edition change. There wasn't any plot back then to disrupt. Nowadays, getting into jokes regarding an edition switch would probably overwhelm the story, which is where Rich's heart really seems to be.

More likely, I would expect perhaps an occasional gag in which the characters bitch about still being stuck in 3.5.

V: "I would like to help, Miss Starshine, but I am afraid I have exhausted my spells for the day."

Haley: "Damn it! Why can't we hurry up and go 4th edition already!"

Elan: "Hey!"

Haley: "Not your fault, sweetie."
