You also left Fighter off the list. They'd be right behind Paladins in the "natural leader" category.

Our group actually does a pretty good job of building consensus, so we don't have a leader "per se."

Unbeknownst to the rest of the group, however, I know it's ME.

In groups where the roleplaying isn't very strong, the players who are most vocal control the game's flow by their willingness to speak openly and often -- regardless of their PC class.

I disagree with this somewhat. We have 2-3 players that like to take charge through force of personality. This does not mean that we are not all good roleplayers, but rather that those who like to lead develop characters that allow this and those who don't want to lead develop their characters that way. We have had sorcceres, wizards, rogues, sammuri, and Paladins all lead.

I would have voted "Paladin", but it wasn't an option.

Failing that, I would have voted "Other/Post on thread", but it wasn't an option.

Failing both of those, I would have voted "lemon curry", but even that was off the list!

It varies from group to group, but it's always one of three experienced players, usually.

In our FR campaign, I used to be the leader of the Copany of Nightfall's favor, but was replaced due to this little murder indictment... Now, one of the Paladins runs the group (or rather he will the next time we play that campaign).

I was the leader of our Military special forces unit in our Flat Earth campaign, and was a cleric/fighter of tempus. The leadership fluctuated between me and the party sorcerer, who is my lieutentant, with me (as sergeant) stepping in when the lieutenant had to be away on business leave.

In the Star Wars game we play, the Paladin-player (playing a Jedi/Force Adept) shares leadership of the group with a Jedi Guardian played by another player. The first player is the "head" while the other player is the "heart". :)

In my groups, there are alway a couple of players who take charge, no matter what they are playing. I'm usually one of them, but I'm playing a character with Cha 8, right now, so I just try to keep my mouth shut and go with the flow. Its really hard though.

Our paladin is played by our quietest player. He never does anything except contribute to fights. His paladin status should probably have been revoked by now for some of the stuff he's let our party do.

It's usually a player rather than a character thing with my group, although it's not really consistently one player or another.

In the last three campaigns I've been in (the only three 3rd ed. campaigns) it has been, oddly enough, the player whose character had the lowest charisma score that tended to dominate the action. For some reason playing a character with no social graces or tact allows people to dominate the action. In two of these, the player was in another game and did not dominate the action in that one.

Perhaps it's a comment on my abilities as a DM, but in the campaign I run. It's certain players who always call all the shots for the party not certain character types.

No, its a comment on their ability as players and personalities. Some people has personalities that make them leaders others followers and some people can act out both roles.

As near as I can tell, I'm the only character in any of my groups without a willpower penalty. It always seems to fall to me because the rest of the people are too indecisive to ever decide anything.
