Who Are The Biggest TTRPG Crowdfunders of All Time?

Spoiler: Magpie and Monte Cook lead the pack!

We know who's in the million dollar TTRPG club, but who has grossest the most of all the TTRPG crowdfunders? I decided to find out!

The difficulty is separating out boardgame companies who have also made a TTRPG. Boardgames, and indeed miniature creators, are a much bigger market than TTRPGs, so those creators have much higher crowdfunding totals. Monolithic, for example has made nearly $20M on boardgames but has one TTRPG in there too. I have included them, but TTRPG-only companies are in bold for those who want to make the distinction. Others, like Catalyst Game Labs or Renegade Game Studios, do produce RPGs but have only (so far) made boardgames and miniatures games via crowdfunding. Generally below I've tried to look at each and see if it makes the majority of its funding by TTRPGs; if so it's in bold.

Magpie Games looks like it's the leader of the pack when it comes to TTRPG companies (as opposed to boardgame companies who also made one TTRPG), with Monte Cook Games very close behind.

I may have missed some. If so, let me know! Note that this list is Kickstarter only. There are other platforms, and some of these creators appear on more than one of them.

*No I don't know why Free League has two Kickstarter accounts. Ask them! But combined they'd be at #4 overall and #1 for TTRPGs.

Ask them! I'm just listing the Kickstarter accounts.

Kickstarter is not the only game in town. :D

For example go to gameontabletop.com and search for Ulisses an then be prepared to do a lot of addition.
Ulisses Spiele sits there on over 7,5 Million (if I didn't miscalculate) Euros of Crowdfundings.

They use gameontabletop as crowdfunding and fullfilment platform even for their crowdfunding they did on kickstarter so their numbers on kickstarter are misleading. Gameontabletop gives a more accurate picture about how much money they make.

Edit: Also looking there for French publisher Black Book Editions might be worthwhile as well. I am not familiar with them but they have a large number of CF there as well.

According to Google Translate, the phrase "Fria Ligan" in Swedish literally means "Free League" in English, so why does the funding stats table split these?

That's fair, but a lot more work to do. I'll take this work for what it is, a snapshot of how well certain companies have done on Kickstarter, which was the only player for a few years and still the majority player for crowdfunding.

Backerkit is definitely winning a lot of creators over as well. I think Monte Cooke is now exclusively through them, the Gloomhaven revision/RPG was 4 million USD alone, et cetera. Some of these records may y stand for a long time on Kickstarter depending on how well Backerkit does in the future.

ART!

Not suprising, but it's interestingt o see how most of the top 10 are existing IP (Batman, Hellboy, Avatar, LOTR) and well-established creators and publishers of quality products (Monte Cook, Kobold Press). Consistency and quality matter!

True but he asked to report the ones he missed. And given that Ulisses Spiele is a top 10 candidate that mostly generates their money with RPG crowdfundings I did my job and reported.... :)
