Who created Athentia and Conundrum Creature in CC II?

Qwillion

First Post
When the creature collection II first came I looked through it expecting to be disappointed, as I had been by the CCI then I got to the Conundrum creature and I thought it was a wonderful creation and the best the book had to offer.

Here was a way to make a puzzle part of the game mechanics of the game. I loved the blending of the so called "fluff" and the "crunch"

I just wanted to know who the original author was of that creation? Does anyone know?
I just wanted to tell them how much I have enjoyed using it.

I don't know, but I wanted to throw in my agreement about the conundrum creature being the best thing in the book- I love it. Put it in two dungeons; the pcs missed it completely the first time, and solved its riddle the second time without ever seeing it until it was back to 'normal.'

Well, at least they got to interact with it. Albeit through a sealed door.

The first time I used it was in a Epic level game, the party had a problem getting through a forbiddance, but Athentia came out and offered the party a riddle that's answer would be the password.

DM: "you feel a supernatural prescence come over you. Do you resist?"

Player: "no, I want the answer"

One conundrum creature and I did not even have to offer the player a save.

Anthentia calculated the DC to be 28 (one party member taking a 20 (no penalty for failure) and 4 others aiding him) for the puzzle, the mage cast fox's cunning and rolled a twenty, then used action points and got a 6 to add to the d20.

Then the player just sat there at the table ranting his riddle to the party. The player even figured out the answer, but could not relay it the party.

I really wish someone at sword and sworcery could let us know who created it.

I've tried looking for it with a Search, no such luck. I know after the release of the books, people would be bragging that they did this or that (for example, I did the Ashcloud in CC3, and the Fireglare Dragon and Dragavial in what would have been CC4 but ended up being Strange Lands). But none claimed Athentia.

Best bet would be to find a contact e-mail at SSS, ask who the editor on the book was and ask them.

Other than that you only have about a one page list of contributing authors to narrow it down to. :)

yeah I know, I have tried getting a response from SSS on a previous issue and they are not very responsive.

I guess I will have to hunt down the editor.

I thought maybe someone just might know.

Oh well.

When i do find out I will post it here

Hi Qwillion,

Wow, I haven't looked on the ENWorld site for awhile, and only just did a search on Google on my creations to see if anyone has used them in their games. To answer your question, I came up with the original version of the Conundrum Creature Template. Someone at SSS invented Athentia based on my idea, and made it even better. I'm glad you (and The Jester) thought it was the best thing in the book...it really makes me happy to hear it.

I also did the Hex Creature template and the Ioun Beholder, for the record.

Sorry for not replying earlier!

Best wishes,
Tony Pi
