Mostly strangers who have become close friends through years of gaming together. The one exception is my girlfriend; who's experience with the fantasy genre was limited to watching a TV adaption of a Narnia book, until I introduced her to the magical world of Magic the Gathering, D&D, Tolkien etc.

Why wouldn't you? It doesn't take long gaming with a group of real rejects to answer that question. I've never actually had to do so, but I still notice a very marked difference between my first Detroit game group, which were fine people, but with whom I didn't click (with all of them, anyway) and my group now. I'll game once or twice with anyone, but as for who's in my regular gaming group, I'm only interested in folks that either I'm already friends with, or with whom I obviously get along well enough that we can become such.
Well, okay. I just like keeping a broad sense of what it means to roleplay. I like my style, but I'm not going to shun others. I haven't gotten along with all the players I've gamed with, but at least I've learned a little from each of them.

Playing with the same people over and over can make the game stagnate.

It can, but it doesn't necessarily. :D
True. It has been, recently, with me. Wouldn't have happened with my old group, and we played 6 days a week at our peak.

One constant, though, is that teaching new players is always fun.

I only game with hot stewardesses.

Ok, maybe not.

My last group was, a good friend of mine that I'd known for several years who I met through gaming. We then advertised and met several other people whom we subsequently invited. Eventually at least one of them became a good friend of mine.

My current group is similar. The DM I met on here (hey, Drife), and his girlfriend, and a few other people he found through meetup.org. They're all decent folks.

A mix of the choices, between friends not made through gaming and friends I met through gaming.

In our current group, the core is myself and a friend I've had since elementary school. He is the person who introduced me to gaming. Later we added his fiancee, now wife, and two of her friends, who were her co-workers originally but have since moved on to other jobs. Now we are all friends, and do things together that don't involve gaming.
