Who Do You Want Illustrating 4th Ed.?

And that is where our tastes diverge.

Exactly. We are talking about art. People tend to like different things. Weird, eh?

Personally, I prefer the "if it looks cool, go with it" approach and I was actually a history major in college. I don't think the "crazy, zany fantasy aesthetic" is appropriate for every setting for D&D under the sun, and I certainly don't have a problem mixing the outrageous stuff with more real world armor.

For the record, I'm not an anime fan and don't play any MMORPG's (OK, I play Urban Dead but that doesn't count due to utter lack of graphics). Also, I hope that comic book comment only referred to the crappy stuff out there and not a blanket dismissal of the entire medium.

I think the problem here is that several folk are willing to slap a whole lot of extra negative connotations on top of the basic "I don't like it" and the "well, I do like it" statements.

Just because armor doesn't look lie it would not be real-world functional, does not render the whole game puerile. And wanting armor to look realistic should not earn a branding as an unthinking grognard.

Folks, treat each other with respect. Stop trying to layer extra traits on someone due to one point of aesthetic sense. That isn't intellectual exchange - it's name calling. You shouldn't have to call the other guy names or belittle them personally or otherwise try to pigeonhole and dismiss them to make your point. If you do, you probably don't have a point to make.

I'd definitely prefer to have reasonable, believable armor (and gear in general) than some of the flat-out absurd stuff we've seen, but I don't think we've really seen that much truly absurd stuff. And I'm not at all interested in slavishly historical armor. I don't set my games in medieval Europe, so I don't want to see equipment that looks like it came from there.

I believe it's possible to design armor that looks interesting, would actually protect the wearer, and might not impair mobility to an unreasonable degree . . . all without knowing words like aventail or tasset. While every setting varies, I like to assume that your average D&D civilization has greater manufacturing capabilities and a longer armor-making history than any medieval culture ever achieved, so as long as the armor in question doesn't leave a whole lot of skin uncovered, or threaten the wearer with imprudently-placed spikes, I'm generally willing to accept it as believable.

Personally, I'd like to see more Brom, Janet Aulisio, and Bill Sienkiewicz. Also, whoever did the cover illustrations and colors from Al Quadim. I'd also like to see Jock (Mark Simpson), Dave Dorman and at least a coupe of people we'd have to pull out of a coffin.

I don't think we'll see any of them. I think we'll get WAR, because WAR is what the art directors at WOTC are familiar with and comes at the right price.

Actually, I suspect we get WAR because he's consistently been so popular.
