Who has the power?

Who has the power in the game?

Didn't vote, but that's due to the lack of an option I would have honestly selected.

If you will, every person at the table has some degree of power. However, it can be a matter of if that person's "power" is respected--whether it's being able to participate equally in a game, contribute to a game, keep things running smoothly & in order, etc.

Henry, IMHO, pretty much hit the nail on the head--things go badly if both elements (DM & players) don't work together, and things can improve greatly from there if both elements do work together. Every once in a while, someone will try a filibuster (i.e., the uncooperative/problem player), but hopefully, that is a rare event instead of a deep-seated tradition. :)

There will, of course, always be those few participants who try to assert dominance over others, whether it's in frot of or behind the DM's screen. IMHO, these instances are some of the most annoying, as well as the most disruptive.

power play

i did vote for the dm I'm although after reading through the forum I give my vote with some conditions. first off as many here have said it shouldn't be about the power hopefully people get along together just hanging out and agree to do this group thing called gaming. now with all that said i've come to the conclusion that a good gm is worth his wait in gold and they should start off saying some of the options of games they want to run and then pitch those to the players. that way the gm the one that inevitably puts the most work into the game makes sure it's something he wants to do. if they do it this way the players have some choice in the matter but in the end the gm puts in the most work. ;)

Here is an idea maybe it does not deal with my group but i want to get a feel for what other groups are like.
Well then, you're getting a good range of answers, including ones from groups where your question is (thankfully) irrelevant. Hooray for you!

You really should have included a "no one" response, though.

I hate it when people post a question and then they get dumped on by people who say why not just game and have fun. They come here for ideas and to share ideas, not for people to act like they are better then other people.
I think many people would agree that power trips occur when someone actually cares "who has the power," and that power trips are in general a hugely disruptive thing, and nowhere near as good as playing in a group where people collaborate, make compromises, treat each other as friends, and generally try to avoid that kind of oneupsmanship crap. If you honestly have to worry about whether a player or the GM has more power (or the ultimate veto, or mutually assured destruction capabilities, or weapons of mass destruction, or whatever it is you're using to define "power"), you're probably having a lousy time. Or at least, a more lousy time than you would be having if you weren't worrying about that kind of junk.

Which, strangely enough, is another way of saying that people who collaborate are better than people who don't. Oh, and that you should just game and have fun. ;)

but it's longer and snarkier, and therefore more fun to say

I like both DMing and Playing. In game, the DM makes the rules. However, in my experienced replacing a bad DM is not as hard as you would think. We went to a more rotational basis for our games after replacing a DM. I definitely like the differences that come from both running and playing.
