#1 Jonathan Tweet- the guy gave us Ars Magica, and D&D 3E.
#2 EGG- nobody has had as big of an impact as he has.
#3 Shane Lacy Hensley- Deadlands- enough said.

I voted other.

When I saw the title to this post (before looking at the choices) I made a mental list of my personal top three RPG designers. Not a single one of them was on the list!!!

Jonathan Tweet
I'm patently amazed that no one has listed him. This man has developed some of my all-tme favorite games. Ars Magica, Over the Edge, Everway, and he was one of the main designers of the third edition! Give the man some props!!!

Robin D. Laws
A few people have mentioned him. This guy has done quite a bit for modern RPGs. He co-developed Over the Edge, was the main designer of Feng Shui, and most recently did the excelent Dying Earth RPG. What more could you ask for!

And last, but definitely not least,
Steve Kenson
Because Mutants & Masterminds is absolutely brilliant. Probably the best thing to come out of the Open Gaming License.

Honorable mention goes to Sandy Peterson, for Call of Cthulhu one hell of an entertaining game. Greg Costikyan for Toon, Paranoia, and Starwars. George MacDonald, and Steve Peterson for Champions!

I had to vote Other because the following people (in no particular order) were not on the list:
Marc Miller - without his Traveller game I would not be celebrating my 25th year of gaming.
Sandy Petersen - Call of Cthulhu
Steve Jackson - GURPS and a host of other cool games
Jeff Grubb - I think that is the guy who created Villains and Vigilantes, which is still my favorite supers game.
Gary Klug - guessing on his name (don't have games at the office) who created DragonQuest, still my favorite fantasy RPG.

I could name more, but those are the big ones in my book.

Actually that would be Jeff Dee...V&V author and late 70's/early 80's D&D illustrator without peer :D

You know, I knew the name was wrong, but that one stuck in my head. Yes, Jeff Dee did some great work for all of roleplaying, and I understand he still has his hand in the game, as it were.

My Other vote goes to Tracy Hickman. His "Ethics in Roleplaying" articles helped this particular LDS gamer, as a youth, convince my parents that D&D was not, contrary to the widespread media claims of the 80s, an inherently evil game.

And then he gave us Ravenloft.... :]

At least your parents aren't the Paranoid type. My parents, or rather my Mother, is. Even after showing them that the rp games I have isn't inherently evil, my Mother is sure that this particular LDS gamer is going to hell for playing them.

No one has mentioned Steve S. Long. Steve S. Long is the coolest designer.

Okay, mods, you can shut the thread down now.

:D
