The best there is: Playing in a group with a very experienced DM AND DMing in a group with less experience.

Totally true!
From my own thinking and the hints from others on this post, I think it's prolly safe to say that it depends on the other players in the group. It's not such a bad thing, even if you're a control freak, to be Playing if u have a DM you really trust as a 'good' DM.
Otherwise, among munckins and newbies etc... you'd rather take the reins yourself and show them how it's done.
DMing is in itself a far more immersing and satifisfing experience for the true DnD afincando. :)

I love to create things so DMing is the way to go. I DM once a week in a Planes traveling adventure and play once a month as a Psychic Warrior/Fighter whom is very disturbed.

Sometimes (like now) I will run an ongoing NPC when DMing whom becomes a part of the party. This gives me a taste of both but isn't quite the same. I concentrate on not using / doing things based on DM knowledge but does allow me to nudge players into a set direction sometimes.

In my 20 years of gaming..

I much perfer to GM. I have played a few games here and there but it never was a totatly satisfying experience for me.

When it comes down to it, I rather play than DM.

DMing just isn't as fun playing for me. Don't get me wrong, sometimes it is a blast, but most of the time I find myself wishing I was on the otherside of the screen.

My plan is to DM until the players get the whole idea...thus expanding their talent as a DM.....and then we switch roles *Evil Laughter*.

No, really though, I dm because I really can't take the other players games. "Hey, you want to go through my Dungeon with the rest of us?" To much hack, to little anything else.

I prefer to DM (or GM if you will), but I am getting an opportunity to play for the first time in over 5 years (DM burnout in one of my campaigns) and I am actually excited.

I still love to play, and every 12-18 months I let another group member assume the controls for a short adventure series. But overall, I prefer to DM since it allows me to craft stories and be a part of all the action within our campaign.
