First Post
This first came from the "Vin Diesel plays DnD" thread, but I decided it should be a new thred.

First thing that shot through my mind was "FR series... Drizzt... OH-MY-GOD!". Think up some black makeup, pointy ears, a black panther companion and two swords, we got a winner ;-)

For the love of god the last thing i want to see in the FR series is drizzit. Nothing personal Cergorach, but i'm really annoyed with the way that "Drizzit" and "Forgotten Realms" have become synonyms in waaaaay too many people's minds. For the series to be a success, it needs to use the realms as the rich setting it has the potential to be, but with new and origional character-types. Not some 4 person archetypical Mage-Cleric-Fighter-Rogue party, and preferably not with someone like Elminster or Drizzit showing up every 15 min because "they're cool" (IMO) Not that i like drizzit, but even if he were in the series, his character would more than likely be misrepresented and so the series would be alienating it's initial fanbase. Besides, isn't Vin far to muscular to be a goddamn elf ?

Good news:

R. A. Salvatore is writing the series bible for the new FR TV series. Salvatore has been writing for Faerun since 1988, and he has a strong perspective on the Realms both as an author and as a gamer.

Bad News:

R. A. Salvatore is writing the series bible for the new FR TV series. You WILL LIKELY SEE DRIZZT introduced into at least one storyline. :)

I myself like Drizzt Do'Urden. I love the archetype, the "peaceful gunslinger who is forced into fighting for good causes." It's been popular throughout the entire history of storytelling.

I doubt we'll see Driz'zt in the FR series. Wanna know why?

Film rights.

Salvatore has said that there have been talks about a Dark Elf movie. If anything D&D related, that's what Vin Deisel might be involved in. Certainly not a TV series. Certainly not one that will be as low-profile as the FR series looks likely to be.

There was a point in the discussions around the Spiderman movie where they thought about using Kingpin in the Spiderman movie. They decided not to because Kingpin was so important to the Daredevil movie that selling the rights to that might be affected.

Similarly, if you were unfortunate enough to see the movie Johnny Mnemonic, you might have noticed that the female lead had a different name from the short story.

Reason: She appears in the novel Neuromancer, and William Gibson and sold the rights to that book (and hence, that character) already.

If Hasbro and WoTC are smart they will keep the FR and Driz'zt thing seperate, the better to sell rights to multiple properties to Hollywood.

I think you're much more likely to see Elminster than Drizzt.

Drizzt would be fine with me, though I wonder how they would portray the Drow. Would they use black actors and actresses? Makeup? Would it look realistic or will they tick off all the FR faithful out there (and would-be viewers)?

Personally, I think the Elaine Cunningham characters (Arilyn Moonblade, Danilo Thann, and Elaith Craulnober) would be even better.

Yeah. Definitely. And have Khelben in there too...and Piergieron, he would be cool.

And perhaps some of the DC D&D comic characters like Kyriana, Onyx and even Timothy (although cetaurs are really hard to do decently).

This is why I lurk...

As the subject says...

This Vin Diesel story is about three minutes old and already there is a tizzy as to why he cannot play [insert fictional character here].

I know from reading these posts that a lot of you live and die by what WotC say but COME ON. The show is still in development and already you are finding fault.

I'm soooooooooo sick of the pathetic minutia that passes for a topic on this board. An hour after a rule book is released some little douche-bag has a post on what rules are "broken" (don't even get me started on that) and why said book sucks.

A lot of you need to realize that the game, nay, the whole genre is what you make of it, and WotC is only one voice in a chorus.

Let the flame war begin, because god knows opinions can't be expressed on these boards anymore.

P.S. No doubt the fact that this is my first post relegates me to the occupation of a troll. This is simply the straw that broke the lurker's back. If I only I were an "elite" poster, I would not have to suffer this...

Actually, I think what wins you the troll label is the combination of your apparent contempt for the "pathetic" discussions, your douche-bag reference, your holier-than-thou tone, and your user name. Troll on, troll!

I've seen some VERY well done Drae at NERO, and I'd say if some people on a budget can out in the 102 degree 85% humidity still look like this with a simple make up kit, a show with a budget can pull of believable Drow.

I wish I could show you the Drae (read: Drow) Samurai in the rulebook. Breath taking.

Man, that pic just doesn't do it justice. I mean, look at this, this is just blown up from a low res picture of the front cover of the rule book. And remember, these are not trained make up artists, these are just gamers like me and you who like to go out and swing padded swords as well as RP.

I'd say make up artists could handle Drow just fine.

Yes, but these are not Forgotten Realms drow. Although if someone looked that good in a TV show as an elf, I would have no complaints, believe me!

I think it is a LACK of info that is hampering my enthusiasm for the FR TV series. If we knew more, the waiting would be easier for me to take.

I'm just glad to see someone with a head for D&D like Salvatore is being consulted for this. This bodes well, not ill.
