late 83 I think, maybe 84, hehe. The reason we were using Gamma world instead of standard D&D was due to all the D&D hysteria at the time. We got to the point that we would play D&D but use the Gamma world books to cover the red-box books, lol. Anyway, after a while the hysteria died down and we were able to play without having to pull off a Stalag-13 style set up. And I do remember, we met up at 7-11 and you went from playing Gauntlet on the arcade to 15 minutes later rolling up your first character, lol. "Conan" didn't last long did he, lol (though I remember the tank :))

My first character, some 10 years ago now, was an elven wizard named "Merlin" (I was in early highschool) done in AD&D 2nd ed. IIRC, he was started at 3rd level (since that's where the group was), and was abandoned at almost 6th level.

I played him when I was actually trying to be clever with spell usage -- the shear number of spells I lost due to bookworms was astounding!

I stopped playing him shortly after he contracted some DM designed magical disease which started to mutate him into some sort of crab-like being (hard shell, claws, telepathy, inability to verbalize, etc); resulting in his complete inability to cast spells. Convieniently, this is when this particular run ended anyways, and we started another game -- this time with "Erasmus" the elven wizard. :D

I've played a small handful of characters since then (never getting beyond 6th level :(; it's my dream to actually play a character who can cast a 4th level spell :D), primarily due to a hiatus for most of my undergrad degree, and getting railroaded into the DM role... ;)

My first character was basic D&D (circa 1978). His name was Walnd and he was "only" a fighter. After over 20 years of gaming, he has followed me across the country numerous times and has been played in three other countries. He encountered everything from Odin to Darth Vader to Asmodeus. What happened to him? Me and my partner formed Thunderhead Games and he can be found in my book, Bluffside: City on the Edge. I converted him to 3rd edition, took out some of the more outlandish possesions he had, and immortalized him. I even got Todd Lockwood to draw him for the book. No matter where I play, Walnd will not be far behind.

My first character was a cleric. Got killed by dire wolves in the first adventure.

My second character fared better...

My first character was Brawlf the dwarf (basic D&D dwarf that is).
He was a master of the mace, and after several months of play, the group of adventurers he was in took over a small chain of islands and retired. I was nine and it was the most fun i'd ever had!

My first character was Rainae, Human Cleric/Ranger/Psion(Savant). I start playing DnD 3ed about one to two years ago. And I'm also the DM and I made my own campaign setting where psionics comes from the mindflayers and talarons(Dragon march 2001). Anyway here is his base stats.

Human(Talaron) Rgn2/Clr1 of Lord Men*/Psn(Savant)5

*:Lord Men is one of the greater powers of my game
Lord Men: NG Greater God of mortals/deities, balance, elemental

Edit: I forgot, Rainae is now dead. He was killed by a member of a cult worshiping a godlike mindflayer named Kalhixsx. I now play Aris, Human Fighter4/Barbarain5

My first character was a Paladin with a name that started with H. Hank, or something.

The DM ran a standard dungeon crawl, but the only miniatures he had were an ogre and two goblins.

Least to say, Hank fought many an ogre and pair of goblins that day...

What's he up to now? I'm not sure. He's probably still in that dungeon (the DM took FOREVER rolling up things behind his screen).

Dragon Breath, a dwarven berserker from the red box set I had just gotten for Christmas. I don't remember his stats or anything, and that pencil-drawn sheet has long since departed. All that's left is vague images of gelatinous cubes and carrion crawlers in an eight-year-old's head.

Oh, yeah...that and me driving my wife nuts with my mess of books & papers on my desk planning out the next weeks session!

And my 18-month-old son who steals those books and finds pictures of dragons and mind flayers and kisses them. My boy's a DM!!!

I can't really recall my first character. I was six at the time, red-box DnD, and I usually dropped in on a game played by a friend and his brothers when we went round to visit his family. I tended to get stuck with spare characters and NPC's, and never got a chance to concentrate on one.

I do have fairly vivd memories of being a halfing at one point, and being convinced that scouting was my job because halflings were naturally lucky. It didn't fare to well, and I'll love wizards forever by bringing some truth to that statement in 3e.

Hobin Kobad, the 3e Elven rogue/wizard, WAY back in '01. I think he died Rog3/Wiz5 (having never used fireball ONCE!)

I named him whilst flipping through the monster manual, and seeing "hobgoblin" and "kobold", respectivly.

Since it was my first time with an RPG, i had absolutly no clue what I was doing. I hadn't read much of the PH, so all my spells were basically useless.

We did a bunch of short quests, and then took on the Forge of Fury. He went unconcious or died more times than it is plesent mentioning. Finally we scrapped the campain at 8th level, right after he was sort of eaten while trying to sneak up behind that big black dragon at the end of the module.

That wasnt cool...
