Who's got the right stuff for League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 1990s?

Hmm...

I think one of the things with the LoEG is that it used characters that are familiar, but in a new sort of role (kinda-superheroish, if you will). So, as familiar as all of the superhero characters are, I'd think it'd be best to avoid them altogether.

As for James Bond, doesn't he going to crop up in a 50's incarnation of the League? (Actually, he does. ) Also, I'd say by Moore using that variety of Bond, the LoEG uses the original/first version of those characters as a basis for the League, instead of later interpretations (for example, using the original version of Bond who was active in the Cold War era).

For an modern day-based version, I'd probably go with:
  • Charlene McGee, Firestarter
  • Sarah Connor, Terminator
  • Lestat de Lioncourt, Vampire Chronicles (the vampire element that Mina Murray once represented)
  • Arthur Dent, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (after the destruction/reconstruction of the Earth & all that)
  • Jason Bourne, The Bourne Identity
  • Dr. Hannibal Lecter, Red Dragon
  • Arkady Renko, Gorky Park

Supporting cast could be various charracters like Dr. Falken from WarGames (as a computer expert), Jack Ryan from The Hunt for Red October as a U. S. gov't liaison, etc.

I came up with some archetypes of late 20th century literature, and figured I'd just pick one of each.

Time Traveler: Dr. Who or Dr. Emmit Brown
Super Spy: Jason Bourne or Ethan Hawke
Anti-Establishment Type: Codename V or The Punisher
Insane-But-Maybe-Useful Type: Tyler Durden or Leonard Shelby
Wisened Olde Leader: Indiana Jones or Rupert Giles
Token Supernatural Guy: Harry Dresden or Harry Potter
"Everyman" Type: Ash Williams or Malcom Reynolds

And the winners are:
- Dr. Who (David Tennant version)
- Jason Bourne
- Codename V
- Tyler Durden
- Rupert Giles
- Harry Dresden
- Malcom Reynolds

google, wiki, imdb ;)

Sarah Connor, Terminator
Dutch Schaeffer, Predator
SA Dale Cooper, Twin Peaks
Ozymandias, Watchmen
Vincent Vega, Pulp Fiction
Charlene McGee, Firestarter
Jason Bourne, Bourne Identity
Connor McLeod, Highlander
Hannibal Lector, Silence of the Lambs
Patrick Bateman, American Psycho

I'm shocked no one said Buffy Summers.

Can't get more iconic [modern era] 90s heroine than that, can you?

Just a quick note on Harry Potter--the first book in the series is set in 1991, not 1997. Harry Potter was born in 1980, so he and his friends would be thirteen if this were set in 1993, not four or seven.

It seems like most of the characters are "victims of fate" in various ways, whether it's from a brush with Dracula or experiments with improving someone's character. Others are definitely experts in their fields. I think you can disqualify anyone who lives in what is already a very alternate reality, including Superman, the X-Men, most other superheroes, the Ghostbusters. I think you also need to exclude time travelers, for reasons of it making sense.

I nominate:

Jack Ryan
Michael Knight and KITT
Charlene from Firestarter is a totally good call
Doogie Howser
D.A.R.Y.L.
Daniel LaRusso (The Karate Kid)
Sabrina (the teenaged witch)
Hannibal Lecter

Harry was 11 in the first book, in 1997. That's make him 7 in 1993, not 4.

Either way, it makes him a small child with a potent, but completely untrained (and subconscious) talent.

Who has just happened to have survived and seemingly killed the world's most powerfulest evil magi and thats just as a newborn baby!
If he was involved he would be just assisting Q and if Q is threatened just "happens" to inadvertedly defeat the villain through some really weird kind of "luck".
"Oh you can talk to snakes?" one asks after the dinosaur rampage ends after Harry politely asks the reptile invaders to return home...

After a quick comb through the wikipedia, here are my picks:

Jack Ryan (Tom Clancy novels)
Ian Malcolm (Chaos theory guy from Jurassic Park and The Lost World)
Dr. Who (More importantly which one?)
Luther Whitney (ageing burglar, Absolute Power)
Tyler Durden/Nameless Narrator (Fight Club)
Clarice Starling (Silence of the Lambs)

WHAT AM I SAYING!
YOU CAN HAVE ALL OF THEM!
