D&D 5E whose spellbooks are these?

Hi all,

In the unofficial errata for Hoard of the Dragon Queen, Steve Winter mentions that there are meant to be two spellbooks in a wooden chest at one point in the adventure. The paragraph describing this accidentally got cut from the book. One spellbook is described as having belonged to a 7th level wizard, while the other belonged to a 9th level wizard.

I randomly generated what spells were in the books:

7th level wizard's spellbook:
1st: alarm, burning hands, charm person, chromatic orb, detect magic, earth tremor, grease, identify, mage armor, unseen servant
2nd: Aganazzar's scorcher, alter self, earthbind, flaming sphere, invisibility, Melf's acid arrow
3rd: clairvoyance, dispel magic, fireball, major image, remove curse
4th: fabricate, Otiluke's resilient sphere

9th level wizard's spellbook
1st: catapult, color spray, detect magic, expeditious retreat, false life, feather fall, grease, ice knife, magic missile, protection from evil and good, Tasha's hideous laughter, Tenser's floating disk
2nd: blur, dust devil, enlarge/reduce, locate object, magic mouth, Snilloc's snowball swarm, spider climb
3rd: fear, fireball, glyph of warding, Melf's minute meteors, protection from energy
4th: arcane eye, fire shield, stone shape, wall of fire
5th: dream, immolation, mislead

Based solely on the selection of spells in their spellbooks, who do you think these wizards were? What was their specialty? What were they like?

This is mostly just for fun, so have at it!

Cheers,
Jonathan

The 7th level to me seems like some sort of advisor to someone important on the surface but tget are secretly a spy.

As for Mr 9th I think he is the "monster that lives in the woods" you know the magic user of advanced age that moved to some backwater village so he could study magic in peace away from the competition of a mage school.

As for specialty can't remember all there perks off hand and not got my books

well not to be a stick in the mud, but hoard of the dragon queen can't have spells from Elemental Evil season in them.

There aren't a ton of wizards, and most of the ones there are are Red Wizards. Historically they usually favor evocation and necromancy. But there are are only 2 that have stat blocks. Azbara was an evoker and Rath Modar was an Illusionist.

That restriction only applies to AL games. I'm running this at home.

These spellbooks are treasure. They've been stolen by the cult (and then stolen again by Pharblex) from two anonymous wizards. They don't belong to the Red Wizards helping the cult. I just thought it would be fun to make up a story about who owned the spellbooks based solely on the spells contained in the books.

Azurewraith's suggestions are excellent. The first can lead easily to a quest, the second can lead easily to a new ally.

The 9th level one reminds me of an Indiana Jones type. Lots of mobility and exploration magic to get through dusty tombs, and defensive and enchanting magic to make a dramatic escape from the rival treasure hunters and natives who try to catch him.

Dimmen Wald, a Mage of the 7th Circle, always wanted to be an adventurer. It was a dream that lead to his death. Dimmen specialized in Evocation magic, especially that which burned, during his formative years, believing that dungeon delves and exploration expeditions required brute force - monsters and foes vanquished in a whoosh of magical flame. He soon learned that there was more to it. As Dimmen traipsed across the known world with his fellows, seeking gold and glory, he learned (a few times the hard and painful way) that a mage in the wilds needed a diversity of magic beyond his beloved burning magic. Rituals to guard the camp; divination magic to see and understand magic; wards to protect or hide from, as well as remove, the effects of that magic; magic to trick and fool those of weaker mind; and most importantly, ways to remake and reshape the world to provide both the comforts of home and the necessities of survival in the wilderness. Sadly, he met his end in his 28th year of his life when he was swept away while crossing a river swollen with snow melt and drowned. His comrades, unable to locate the body, left a simple stone marker on the riverbank.

Gnomes are crazy little buggers, you know that? I traveled with one, many years ago. Indobble Mist-i-something. Just crazy. Once set a guy on fire, easy as you please. Loved to trick folk, loved to play pranks. Like kids. Hell, even though he was a pretty powerful wizard and his prized spellbook went missing - he just shrugged his shoulders and went on his merry way. Now, if you want a real story, buy me another pint and I'll tell you about the time I looked a dragon square in the eye - and spit in it.

"Whose spell book is this?"
"It's a grimoire baby"
"Whose grimoire is this?"
"Zed's"
"Who's Zed?"
"Zed's dead, baby. Zed's dead"

Sorry. Couldn't help myself.
