Why all the fiendish love?

There are a couple of posts I've deleted because they were not grandma-friendly.

Please take care what you talk about, guys & gals.

Thanks

I find all this attention on demons and devils to be a bit odd, but that's probably due to my campaigns being more influenced by basic D&D where such critters didn't even exist. And I wouldn't know a Tiefling from a Twinkie so I'm a bit confused as to how such characters would fit into my game. I might take a page from WFRP though and just consider them beastmen and/or mutants which seems pretty appropriate. Kill the Mutant. Purge the Unclean! Berate the Emo! :]

Well, if you are going to be literal about it, yours is a very specific definition of "in poor taste". There is nothing to indicate that the phrase must mean that there is no other purpose than to offend. In fact, a distasteful or in poor taste comment is often one where the person making the comment is totally unaware that s/he is being either offensive, or crude, or tactless.
Note my use of the word "usually," please. Of course there are instances in which people may be in poor taste without intending to be, but they usually aren't blamed for it, since such remarks are generally considered to be unintentionally in poor taste. So no, it isn't a specific definition; it's the correct one.

I find the inclusion of Tieflings to be crude or lowlife. It does not offend me, I just find it below pedestrian, the opposite of heroic, and as Imp put it, cheesy.
Fine. Then it's not to your taste; saying it's in poor taste is a malapropism.

Now I'm picturing Twinkie the Kid with devil horns.

I'm not big on tieflings for various reasons, but at least it seems that the designers are clarifying the fact that tieflings are not half-fiends and have, at best, a very remote fiendish ancestry. I prefer tieflings that result from "planar conjuctions during pregnancy" or "mysterious arcane influence."

Now that is a good point. I feel silly not having thought of it. If Focus on the Family comes out with a major anti-D&D drive, I wonder how many new players we get within 6 months?

If enough of the religion right wing fanatics come out agasit it the question is how long until Hasbor dumps wotc?

Because the religious right coming out against Harry Potter was so effective.

Because a human has free will, and part of a tiefling does not.

I'm not sure what you mean by this.

In my opinion, before this is interesting as a fantasty prop, the tiefling would have to have a range of free will that lies outside the range of free will seen in ordinary humans. That is, they have to be clearly inhuman in the aspect you are intending to bring into sharp relief - in this case violition. For me, that would mean something like the most free willed tiefling has slightly less free will than a pyschotic serial killer or a sufferer of severe obsessive compulsive disorder. Is that what you mean by 'partially lacking in free will'?

Is Imp's comparison to lycanthropy fair? Perhaps a comparison to STtNG's Borg as they were originally presented and before they ruined them by just making them ordinary people with stuff screwed in thier bodies?

You've had all of two posts on this thread and both of them are talking about vocabulary.

You need to get outdoors more and focus on the important things in life. ;)

You got to get yourself a hobby. I know, why don't you trying playing DND? Course, you had best not tell your DM that he's using the wrong phrases. You might get your PC killed that way.

Because fiends are cool, and not everyone wants to play LG w/ the giant LG belt buckle who goes out and kills the evil monsters to save the people of the good kingdom Goodie-Goodie. ;)

Hyperbole for the win. But on a more serious note, it's just a different style of game. I like darker games with absolute blacks and whites drifting around in a sea of grays. Thus lotsa fiends.
