He rambles a bit, but I think the point is valid. Too many websites are cluttered. I fall into the same trap trying to make my pages look "full"; needlessly filling "empty" spaces.
On a lot of sites, part of that clutter is a result of Search Engine Optimization. Search engines demand that you cram as many links and other junk onto a page as you can, and they rank your pages higher if they have more links to and from. Ironically, Google's supremely uncluttered website is the cause of many other incredibly cluttered websites.

And you can also thank every elementary school art teacher in the world for constantly saying "there's too much white space, add more stuff". ;)
