why are wizards so weak?

I could never, ever play a wizard.

I'm quite enjoying my warmage, though. No planning involved whatsoever, just glorious, glorious slaughter.

Looking at the warmage, I could never play one. They have no defenses. They can wear light and medium armor, but they have no invisibility, no shield, no dimension door, no displacement, no freedom of movement, no dispel magic, no protection from energy, no fly, no teleport...in short, they are utterly at the mercy of any creature that corners them, and with a typically low AC and d6 HD, that makes them meat. I'm glad you're enjoying the class, but I'd rather play a character that has the capability to get himself out of a tight spot when he needs to. The lack of any defensive magic whatsoever seems to be a serious flaw in the warmage class.

And god help the wizard with that disintegrate if the target has spell turning.
Which is to say, god help the wizard with that disintegrate if the target is another high level wizard, a high level cleric with either the luck or magic domain, or someone with a whole lot of money sunk into a single magic ring.

I've got a player who is very, very unsure about trying a spellcaster. The warmage is her first shot at it, and I'm looking forward to see how it plays out. The lure is that she doesn't have to select spells -- not daily, and not every level. She also has one task to perform: kill things. And, she gets to wear some armor, up to mithril full plate at 8th level.

Or, rather, God help the wizard whose DM doesn't know the rules:

Go easy on her since she's new, then. :)

It should be noted, without getting into a huge hijack, that one must be proficient in the use of full plate armor before one can wear mithril full plate. Thus, a warmage without the Heavy Armor Proficiency feat can't wear it.

On a reread of the rules, you are correct. Limitations are laxed, but it does not say they are truly one category lighter. I can't think of anything besides the proficiency, though, where it'd make any difference, though.

Yeah. I see a problem here. These combo's require a high level wizard (15th in the latter case, or Epic in the former). But at those levels, many boss monsters will have high SR, or outright spell immunity, and also more than enough hit points to simply "take the hit" and keep coming at you.

Empowered Ray of Enfeeblement: 3rd level slot.

You can use that at low levels, when you probably don't have to worry (too much) about SR or spell immunity, and really take away the power of a melee character.
