Just another hurdle. I remember too, when 5E was destined for failure in 2 years tops and would mothball the entire brand. 🤷‍♂️
Even I, someone who has never been particularly positive toward 5th edition, never made such a ludicrous claim.

I'd appreciate not being lumped with folks who catastrophized without any data. Even when I was criticizing early 5.0, I did so by saying that it was entirely possible that its "everyone's* second-favorite edition" approach could do quite well, or it could backfire horribly with folks viewing it as distinctly inferior to their first preference. History has borne out that it succeeded.

*For a suitably narrow definition of "everyone." Mostly excluding fans of The Edition That Must Not Be Named, for obvious reasons.

Tried to get new players for Cyberpunk. No one applies.
Tried to get new players for Shadowdark. No one applies.
Tried to get new players for AD&D. No one applies.
Tried to get new players for Vampire the Masquerade. No one applies.
Tried to get new players for The One Ring. No one applies.

Tried to get new players for D&D 5.5E. 2 messages within a few hours.

That's why.

Also despite the massive bloat, it's easy to learn. Which is why Shadowdark is better. Trims off all that bloat.
Biiiiig mood, friend.

Did more or less the same thing, just with 4e, 13th Age, and Shadowrun.

There were several people who repeatedly claimed it was or would be a catastrophic failure, in large part because of the slow release schedule. There are still several people that claim it is dying right now because of a handful of deeply flawed reports on sales when nobody outside of WotC has any clue how well it's selling or what the expectations were. There's not really a reason for everyone to convert to 5E.24 immediately even if they plan on doing so eventually. Toss in the sole and only reason for it's sales growth is being mentioned on Stranger Things and, of course Critical Role.

By the way if your definition of "everyone" doesn't really mean or even come close to the majority of people playing the game, why use the term "everyone's second favorite game"? Because for the people I play with? It sounds like a weird appeal to popularity .... when for at least 90% of the people I've actually played with over the years it's their favorite game. It's just odd.

I think i said this in another thread... its damning with faint praise.

Guys, we had this discussion in a thread like a month or two ago. IT'S A METAPHOR.

You might want to look up the meaning of the word metaphor. Could "2nd most popular" be literally true? Of course! Is it true? No, as far as I can tell not even remotely close. Hence not a metaphor. It's an grand exaggeration and claim that your personal preference is widespread.

I teach language and literature. IT'S NOT A METAPHOR.

It's just BS (definition: making up "facts" without any regard for their truthfulness).

Also, any claim that is built on an "everyone knows..." premise should automatically be viewed with strong skepticism.
