Why aren't humans in the MM?

Yea, they most definitely used to be in 2e. 1e too, I think.

I think a better question is - why are halflings, dwarves, elves, and gnomes in the MM?

An even more thought-provoking question is why are hit dice for players based on the class, and not the race? So, a halfling barbarian has d12 hit dice, but a half-orc sorcerer only has d4?

What!?

Ok, don't answer that. Carry on, then!

They was robbed, its rank discrimination I tell ya.

(although humans do show up in the lycanthropes and a few other templates).

It would have been more consistent to put them in there.

What are you?

This raises the question of what monsters are or the purpose of the MM is...
BUT, if the other races are there, then so should humans. AND

Yes, there should be humans in the MM as encounters, properly listed & described Merchants, Adventurer Groups, Bandits/Pirates, Nomads, Pilgrims, Patrol Groups, Strongholds et al. Low, Medium & High EL groups, ideally (Low - 1-6 Nomads, High - 30-300 Nomads). It would certainly make my DMing a lot easier not to have to convert from my 1e MM!

I don't just say for retro sake, this could be usefull, in the MM or somewhere else.

I noticed their absence the day I bought the 3.0 MM home, and have been puzzled by it ever since. I guess 'saving space' is the best answer I've been able to come up with, myself.

In some other current threads the common "3rd edition is to hard to DM because statting up NPCs takes to long" comment has come up, again.

Adding "Men" back to the monsters--and going well beyond what is in the DMG--could be a start to addressing this

[hijack]If you were a monster in the monster manual which monster would you be? I'll take the ogre any day of the week and twice on Sundays. If you have a 3.5 MM you only need to open to pages 198 and 199 to see why.[/hijack]

In addition to agree with Hong and Nisarg, I'd like to point out that all the monsters in the MM have 10s and 11s in their scores and are given a class of warrior, if they don't have any racial hit dice. In all honesty, this isn't very hard to do your self. Humans don't have any racial abilities that modify their stats. Heck, I wouldn't even need to write down the statblock of a 1st lvl Human War. I'd do it all in my head.
