D&D 3E/3.5 Why be a 3.5 fighter?

I'm not even sure swapping out the dog's feat is legal. An animal companion is "typical for its kind."
I always thought that meant that you couldn't apply templates to them.

Considering that many things you can train a dog for in real life, I wouldn't have a problem with a Riding Dog picking up other feats.

Think of it as the difference between having a watchdog, an attack dog and a sled dog. Watchdog might stick with Alertness, but the attack dog might have Weapon Focus (or some other combat feat), and the sled dog probably takes Endurance.

Why would any body want to be core fighter when then are other combat focus classes who have better saves can do more damage and have more hit dice than a core fighter?
No book of nine swords characters.

First, why ask why?
People who ask these kinds of questions are prats.

Second, even if I wasn't absolutely sure you were a troll or an idiot, I shall answer your question as a matter of principal.

Fighters have an almost unlimited supply of feats and are therefore extremely customizable. Unlike paladins and monks, they can vary their combat styles. They can pick up any martial weapon and be proficient with it. Yes, they can only specialize in a few, but only roll" players are concerned about "doing max possible damage every bloody round", and only an idiot would call a fighter without his specialized weapon "useless"...you STILL CAUSE DAMAGE WITH A NON SPECIALIZED WEAPON YOU TOOL!

Third, the "why be a fighter?" argument is the reason why the Book of Weaboo Fighting Magic was written.

Barbarians are simpler and about as effective. Harder to mess up too; if a barb chooses the wrong feats, he still has his rage. A fighter who chooses the wrong feats is basically a waste of space.

t.

Again, there is no such thing as a "wrong" feat. Your attitude that a fighter who does not follow a specific tree is a "waste of space" tells me that you are :):):):)ing moron and the WORST sort of roll-player: the pretentious elitist who thinks that all but a few feats are "completely useless" despite actually having some bloody use...

I dub ye a "Homer Simpson roll-Player"...if it isn't perfect you say it's useless.

J'emmerde ton canape.

How presumptuous of you. Say that to my face.

aarondirebear, your comments here are completely unacceptable and you should know it. There will be no further warnings.

Aaaaaanyway...

Fighters are just plain fun. I'm running an Arabian themed character who wields two Scimitars in battle. His first level was Swordsage and I'm taking him 11 levels of Fighter for the BAB and the feats. By CL 9th I will be able to take Scorching Sirocco and light people on fire from a DC20 tumble check, and currently my tumble is +18 at 6th. Fighters are just plain fun. I love this character and I will always love lighting people on fire with a tumble check. After 12th level i will continue with the swordsage because i have everything i need, but that was six bonus feats and the 5 regular progression feats, and without those bonus feats I wouldn't be able to do that. It's just a fun class to play.

Not to be negative about a character you like -- and certainly not to question the value of setting people on fire -- but aren't you delighting in the abilities granted you by the Swordsage class rather than the Fighter class?

Cheers, -- N
