why cant you sunder armour?

I would just go with the house rule that any excess damage comes right off the armor class of the armor. Once the armor class is reduced to 0, it is destroyed. Thoughts?

this is another confused question from the Son of sleep, the title says it all really.

I want to know why its not possible to sunder armour worn by another character,
after all why sunder unworn armour?

is it balance?
is it just to make life easier?

incidently i know this goes against all the advice i had for trying to speed up combats, ive used some of it and its definitely helped, so thanks guys :)

no called shots.

and to attack multiple straps to undo armor would require more than just one hit.

How's this?

SUNDER ARMOR
Requires: Improved Sunder
Benefit: As a Standard Action you can attempt to sunder an opponents worn armor. Make a single normal melee attack roll against the opponent. For every 5 points of damage you deal to the opponent, their armor bonus from their worn armor is reduced by 1 point. Should their armor bonus reach 0 or below, the armor becomes useless and needs to be repaired before it can be worn again and grant it's normal armor bonus. This special Standard Action provokes an attack of opportunity.

IMPROVED SUNDER ARMOR
Requires: Improved Sunder, Sunder Armor
Benefit: Same as Sunder Armor except you do not provoke and attack of opportunity.

If this seems a little unbalanced, you can change it up like the Rogue feats that allow you to remove sneak attack damage to hamper movement (for example). For every 5 damage you would normally do to an opponent, you can remove 5 damage from your hit to reduce their armor bonus by +1. So if you deal 12 damage, you can really deal 2 damage and remove +2 from their chain shirt (for example). I just left the damage in there because I agree that it would be kind of tough to damage their armor and NOT the person inside at the same time.

I was under the impression that not being able to sunder armor was a game balance thing. If you could sunder armor, the loss of AC would quickly make combat much deadlier for PCs, and/or make it too easy to defeat NPCs.
