I know this might sound like a strange idea to some folks out there, but I've been thinking of telling the next group of 1st lvl PCs, once they have their characters fleshed out, that they also have a level of Commoner, which will buff them up slightly, but also help develop their backstory a little bit. For the initial phase of the campaign world I have designed, it helps if the PCs are grounded a bit more into the local region. That they have families, a village they are from, they know where the biggest town is and that there's a major river a bit to the south. Also, I'm wanting the flavor to be more visceral, realistic (bit of an oxymoron in a fantasy milieu, I know), and tangible.
